October 7 Testimonies Reveal Israel’s Military ‘Shelling’ Israeli Citizens with Tanks, Missiles

Israel’s military received orders to shell Israeli homes and even their own bases as they were overwhelmed by Hamas militants on October 7. How many Israeli citizens said to have been “burned alive” were actually killed by friendly fire?

Several new testimonies by Israeli witnesses to the October 7 Hamas surprise attack on southern Israel adds to growing evidence that the Israeli military killed its own citizens as they fought to neutralize Palestinian gunmen.

Tuval Escapa, a member of the security team for Kibbutz Be’eri, set up a hotline to coordinate between kibbutz residents and the Israeli army. He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that as desperation began to set in, “the commanders in the field made difficult decisions – including shelling houses on their occupants in order to eliminate the terrorists along with the hostages.”

A separate report published in Haaretz noted that the Israeli military was “compelled to request an aerial strike” against its own facility inside the Erez Crossing to Gaza “in order to repulse the terrorists” who had seized control. That base was filled with Israeli Civil Administration officers and soldiers at the time.

These reports indicate that orders came down from the military’s high command to attack homes and and other areas inside Israel, even at the cost of many Israeli lives.

An Israeli woman named Yasmin Porat confirmed in an interview with Israel Radio that the military “undoubtedly” killed numerous Israeli noncombatants during gun battles with Hamas militants on October 7. “They eliminated everyone, including the hostages,” she stated, referring to Israeli special forces.

As David Sheen and Ali Abunimah reported in Electronic Intifada, Porat described “very, very heavy crossfire” and Israeli tank shelling, which led to many casualties among Israelis.

While being held by the Hamas gunmen, Porat recalled, “They did not abuse us. We were treated very humanely… No one treated us violently.”

She added, “The objective was to kidnap us to Gaza, not to murder us.”

According to Haaretz, the army was only able to restore control over Be’eri after admittedly “shelling” the homes of Israelis who had been taken captive. “The price was terrible: at least 112 Be’eri residents were killed,” the paper chronicled. “Others were kidnapped. Yesterday, 11 days after the massacre, the bodies of a mother and her son were discovered in one of the destroyed houses. It is believed that more bodies are still lying in the rubble.”

Much of the shelling in Be’eri was carried out by Israeli tank crews. As a reporter for the Israeli Foreign Ministry-sponsored outlet i24 noted during a visit to Be’eri, “small and quaint homes [were] bombarded or destroyed,” and “well-maintained lawns [were] ripped up by the tracks of an armored vehicle, perhaps a tank.”

Apache attack helicopters also figured heavily in the Israeli military’s response on October 7. Pilots have told Israeli media they scrambled to the battlefield without any intelligence, unable to differentiate between Hamas fighters and Israeli noncombatants, and yet determined to “empty the belly” of their war machines. “I find myself in a dilemma as to what to shoot at, because there are so many of them,” one Apache pilot commented.

Philippe Lazzarini says his UNWRA staff members in the Gaza Strip have appealed to him to continue calling for a humanitarian ceasefire.

Speaking to reporters in Rafah, the UNRWA chief said he visited a school sheltering displaced Palestinians that had been indirectly hit, killing one person and injuring dozens.

“I was shocked by the fact that everybody there was asking for food, was asking for water,” Lazzarini said. “I never, ever have seen something similar in Gaza when I came before after conflicts.”

🚨BREAKING: Mexico announces $3.4 billion plan to rebuild Acapulco after Hurricane Otis, Mexico to give interest subsidies, but no loans, to Acapulco hotels destroyed by Hurricane Otis

The plan includes tax breaks and financial assistance for affected families, and President López Obrador said the government would spend more if necessary.

Mexico’s government on Wednesday unveiled a $3.4 billion recovery plan for the battered coastal resort of Acapulco, including tax breaks and financial assistance for affected families, and said it could spend more if necessary.

Last week, Hurricane Otis slammed into Acapulco, devastating local infrastructure, severing communications and temporarily leaving the city of 900,000 people incommunicado.

The overall investment needed for the recovery plan was estimated at about 61.3 billion pesos ($3.42 billion), Finance Minister Rogelio Ramirez de la O told a press conference.

The Mexican government said Wednesday it will assume half of the interest rates on bank loans to help rebuild the 377 hotels destroyed or heavily damaged after Hurricane Otis slammed into the resort city last week.

But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not provide government loans to the hotels, the backbone of the local economy.

The hotels currently have no cash flow — and face months of work to repair windows and walls blown out by the Category 5 hurricane — so it is unclear how many private banks would be willing to lend them money.

🚨BREAKING: AI Safety Summit: China, Us and EU Agree to Work Together

China agreed to work with the United States, European Union and other countries to collectively manage the risk from artificial intelligence at a British summit on Wednesday aimed at charting a safe way forward for the rapidly evolving technology.

Some tech executives and political leaders have warned the rapid development of AI poses an existential threat to the world if not controlled, sparking a race by governments and international institutions to design safeguards and regulation.

In a first for Western efforts to manage its safe development, a Chinese vice minister joined U.S. and EU leaders and tech bosses such as Elon Musk and ChatGPT's Sam Altman at Bletchley Park, home of Britain's World War Two code-breakers.

More than 25 countries present, including the United States and China, as well as the EU, signed a "Bletchley Declaration" saying countries needed to work together and establish a common approach on oversight.

The declaration set out a two-pronged agenda focused on identifying risks of shared concern and building scientific understanding of them, while also developing cross-country policies to mitigate them.

Wu Zhaohui, China's vice minister of science and technology, told the opening session of the two-day summit that Beijing was ready to increase collaboration on AI safety to help build an international "governance framework".

Israel’s Long-Held Plan to Drive Gaza’s People Into Sinai Is Now Within Reach

As the UK and US back the carnage in Gaza, including an imminent ground invasion, are they also about to assist Israel’s ethnic cleansing plan for a “Greater Gaza” – in Egypt?

As Israel masses its forces along the fence encaging Gaza, waiting for a green light from the United States for a ground invasion, the question few are asking is: What is the ultimate endgame for Israel?

Instead, British and US politicians, backed by their media, have limited themselves to amplifying Israel’s bogus rationales for indiscriminately bombing men, women and children in the tiny coastal enclave and preparing to send in troops. Only 80 or so British MPs, out of 650, have so far called for a ceasefire.

Israeli strikes are known to have killed more than 7,000 Palestinians, nearly half of them children, with many times that number seriously injured. They are being treated in hospitals without medicines or electricity. The United Nations estimates at least 600,000 Palestinians are homeless from the bombing.

At first, Western establishments justified the carnage as Israel’s “right to defend itself” – a right Palestinians had been denied for the previous 16 years while Israel enforced a brutal military siege of the enclave that prevented basic goods and medicines from entering.

Israel’s supposed “right to self-defence” – the official line from both sides of the political aisle in Britain – serves as western cover for, and complicity in, the crimes against humanity Israel has been committing: mass killing and wanton destruction; a “complete siege” of Gaza, starving it of food and water; and attacks on community infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, mosques, and UN compounds.

But now, as the death toll becomes increasingly obscene, the rationale has shifted. In chorus, British and US politicians say Israel must be given the time and space to “destroy Hamas”.

....‘Greater Gaza’

Behind the scenes, Israeli officials term their latest ethnic cleansing proposal a “Greater Gaza Plan”. Details first leaked in the Israeli media in 2014, although reports indicate that the origins date to 2007, when the Bush administration was apparently brought on board following Hamas’ election victory in Gaza a year earlier.

At the time, Israel’s secret plan relied on carrots more than sticks. The idea was to attach Gaza to Sinai, erasing the border between the two. Washington would help secure international funding for a free trade zone in Sinai.

...Israel’s goal is to speed up the process of making Gaza uninhabitable.

Israel needs Palestinians in Gaza so desperate to leave that they will ethnically cleanse themselves, and Egypt under so much opprobrium for not opening the border to Sinai that it finally relents.

With its current bombing campaign, Israel has moved from carrots to a very large stick.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is aware that he has only a limited time-window to effect enough carnage to realise Israel’s plan.

Notably, back in 2018, veteran Israeli reporter Ron Ben-Yishai revealed that the Israeli military was considering a new strategy towards Gaza that involved invading it and dissecting it in two, with Israel occupying the northern half.

At the same time the US was said to be willing to deepen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis by withholding funds from UNRWA, the UN’s relief agency.

US Seeks to Ramp up Munitions Production for Ukraine, Israel

President Joe Biden’s $106 billion defense spending supplemental request to Congress aims in part to bolster munitions production capacity to continue rushing arms to Ukraine and Israel.

The Senate Appropriations Committee questioned Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at a Tuesday hearing on the status of U.S. stockpiles and the workforce, supply chain and infrastructure constraints of weapons manufacturers racing to replenish them.

The Senate is formulating its supplemental spending bill encompassing both Ukraine and Israel aid, while the House is set to vote on a stand-alone Israel aid bill later this week.

Israel Told US ‘Mass Civilian Casualties’ Were Acceptable Price of Gaza Campaign

The Pentagon has said there are 'no limits' on how Israel uses its US-provided weapons despite the massive child death toll

During conversations with Israeli officials, it became clear to the Biden administration that Israel believed “mass civilian casualties” were an acceptable price of the bombing campaign in Gaza, The New York Times reported on Monday.

The Times report said that Israeli officials referred to US and allied bombing campaigns in Germany and Japan during World War II that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. The reference includes the US fire bombings of Japanese cities, which killed around 100,000 civilians in Tokyo in one night in 1945, as well as the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Israel’s plans for mass slaughter in Gaza and the growing child death toll have not impacted US support. The Times report focused on how the Biden administration is paying lip service to the idea of limiting civilian casualties, but it acknowledged they’re not telling Israel what to do, only asking questions.

Australia’s Authoritarian “Misinformation” Bill Has Fewer Protections Against Self-Incrimination Than For Murderers or Arsonists

The very foundations of free speech in Australia are under threat, warn legal experts, as the country considers adopting a chilling law that aims to tackle online “misinformation.” The proposed legislation could expose Australians, who are accused of disseminating misinformation on the web, to sometimes graver legal consequences than those suspected of severe criminal offenses, such as arson or even murder, the Daily Telegraph Australia reported.

Protection against self-incrimination is a key principle in Australian law, rooted in English common law traditions. It ensures individuals aren’t compelled to provide evidence or answer questions that might incriminate themselves in criminal proceedings. The Evidence Act and various regulatory statutes in Australia explicitly protect this right. However, there are exceptions, such as some regulatory contexts where individuals can be compelled to provide evidence, though with safeguards like “use immunity” to prevent the evidence from being used against them in criminal proceedings. Australia’s High Court has emphasized the importance of this right, even as debates emerge regarding its balance with community safety concerns, especially in contexts like terrorism and organized crime.

A profound concern among critics is the expansive power the draft bill confers upon government media regulators. They would wield the authority to summon anyone believed to have insights into the spread of “misinformation or disinformation.” Failing to appear when called would lead to hefty fines, escalating beyond $9,390 daily.

This development has stirred significant contention, as the bill seems to undermine the cherished “right to silence” principle, which shields Australians suspected of crimes.

US Special Operations Forces are in Israel Helping Locate Hostages

NYT reports the US commandos are not assigned combat roles

American special operations forces are on the ground in Israel helping locate the hostages Hamas brought into Gaza after the October 7 attack on southern Israel, a Pentagon official said on Tuesday.

“We’re actively helping the Israelis to do a number of things,” said Christopher P. Maier, the assistant secretary of defense for special operations, according to The New York Times. He said the main task is to “identify hostages, including American hostages.”

Maeir did not say how many US commandos were in Israel, but US officials told the Times that several dozen had been deployed in addition to a small team that was already in Israel on October 7. Shortly after the Hamas attack, the Pentagon offered Israel special operations support.

The Times report said that the US commandos were not assigned to combat roles, and so far, there’s no indication that US troops are on the ground in Gaza as Israeli forces are pushing further into the enclave. Maier said the special operators were talking through with their Israeli counterparts “what is going to be a very complex fight going forward.”

At US Universities, Free Speech Isn’t Free for Pro-Palestine Activists

Students have faced accusations of antisemitism and been targeted for speaking out against Israeli occupation since the latest war began

American universities claim to be places where ideas meet and unconventional views are challenged.

But most pro-Palestine students and faculty staff would likely say otherwise.

Since Palestinian armed groups launched a surprise attack on Israel on 7 October, and Israel responded with its declaration of war, tensions have raged on US university and college campuses - places that have traditionally served as hotbeds for political activism.

At elite universities such as Harvard, Columbia and Yale, amongst others, students say their attempts to speak out against the horrors being unleashed in Gaza are being conflated with antisemitism with devastating effect.

Late last week, the US Senate passed a resolution describing Palestinian student groups at several universities as "antisemitic, repugnant, and morally contemptible," adding that they were "sympathising with genocidal violence against the State of Israel and risking the physical safety of Jewish Americans."

Then, earlier this week, the Biden administration directed the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Education to partner with campus law enforcement to investigate anti-semitic incidents on campus.

Students from several leading US universities, many of whom spoke to MEE on condition of anonymity, said even the most benign efforts to call for a ceasefire, or lead a teach-in to shed light on Israeli occupation, were being met with vicious attempts to criminalise them, embarrass their families or destroy their career plans.

They said that discussions surrounding Israel's 75-year occupation of the Palestinian territories were muzzled for years, long before the latest round of hostilities began, but the level of intimidation had now become stark, with a growing obfuscation of Israeli crimes at an institutional level.

Report: Netanyahu Lobbied EU to Pressure Egypt to Accept Refugees from Gaza

Key European countries dismissed Netanyahu's idea as unrealistic

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied European leaders to pressure Egypt into allowing Palestinian refugees into its territory from Gaza, Financial Times reported on Monday.

The report, which cited people familiar with the talks, said the discussions happened last week. But key European countries, including Britain, France, and Germany, dismissed the idea as unrealistic due to Egypt’s stated opposition to absorbing Palestinian refugees.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said recently that he opposed “any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian issue by military means or through the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land, which would come at the expense of the countries of the region.”

The Financial Times report came after a document prepared by Israel’s Intelligence Ministry proposing pushing all of Gaza’s approximately 2.3 million residents into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula was leaked and published by Hebrew-language media. The document outlined a plan to create a “sterile” buffer zone in Sinai to keep Palestinians away from the border.

In light of the leak, Cairo reiterated its opposition to the idea. “We, the Egyptians, are ready to sacrifice millions of lives so that nobody approaches a grain of sand [in North Sinai],” Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Tuesday, according to The New Arab.
