US envoy Tom Barrack said on 18 August during his visit to Beirut that Israel should comply with the terms of the ceasefire that ended its war against Lebanon, now that the Lebanese government has agreed to begin the process of disarming Hezbollah.
“I think the Lebanese government has done their part. They've taken the first step. Now what we need is Israel to comply with that equal handshake,” Barrack said following a meeting .. with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
Barrack claimed that the delegation, which included Deputy US Envoy Morgan Ortagus, carried “no threats regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah,” which was a “sovereign decision for the Lebanese state.”
“There is cooperation from all sides. We are not here to intimidate anyone. The positive outcomes will benefit Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Israel alike. Our focus is on future prosperity, not fear.”
Earlier this month, the Lebanese government agreed to a phased roadmap for Hezbollah to give up its weapons.

Israeli FM Urges Washington To Reject Extension Of UNIFIL Mandate: Report
Gideon Saar wrote a letter to Marco Rubio arguing that the UN interim force ‘failed’ its mission in Lebanon and must be ‘disbanded’
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar requested from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the mandate of UNIFIL activities in south Lebanon be terminated, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.
Saar sent a letter to his US counterpart arguing that the UN interim force “has failed its core mission – to prevent Hezbollah's entrenchment south of the Litani River – as evidenced by the recent war.”
“The force was intended to be temporary from the outset and has failed,” Saar said, according to the report.
“Saar emphasized that Israel seeks an immediate end to UNIFIL's mandate. As an alternative, he suggested a temporary extension of six months to one year to allow for a proper disbanding, enabling the Lebanese Armed Forces to redeploy in southern Lebanon and UNIFIL to evacuate its positions in an orderly way,” Israel Hayom wrote.
“During this interim period, UNIFIL's activities would focus on specific tasks, such as clearing explosives and mines, training the Lebanese army, and organizing the withdrawal of its forces. Saar further noted that the recent war and Hezbollah's significant weakening present a historic opportunity to achieve two goals: disarming Hezbollah and supporting the Lebanese army in asserting full sovereignty over its territory.”

“Whether or not there should be massive development in E1 is a decision for the government of Israel to make,” he said, adding that the US would not interfere in Israel’s decisions.
His comments directly contradict international consensus. Omar Shakir of Human Rights Watch told Middle East Eye that settlement expansion is a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute.
In 2020, the EU and 15 European states denounced the E1 plans, while the UN’s Stephane Dujarric warned this week that the project “would put an end to prospects of a two-state solution.”

BBC Witnesses Israeli Settlers' Attack On Palestinian Farm In West Bank
From among the broken remains of Brahim Hamaiel's olive trees, in the occupied West Bank, we saw the masked men approach.
A dozen settlers, charging down from the illegal outpost above his farm and across the field towards us, moving fast and carrying large sticks.
A sudden and unprovoked attack.
Brahim had been showing us the trees he said had been hacked to pieces this week by settlers from the outpost.
His family have farmed olives here on land near Turmus Aya, for generations, making it a target for extremist settlers who think killing Palestinian trees and livestock will also kill the idea of a Palestinian State, by forcing residents like Brahim off their land....
As the masked men run towards us, we pull back to the road and drive a safe distance away.
Within minutes, some of Brahim's neighbours from the surrounding farms and villages gather with catapults and stones to confront the attackers...
This is now a familiar routine. Palestinians living in these villages south of Nablus say there are attacks and confrontations on their lands every week, and that settlers are using these kinds of tactics to take over the land, field by field.
But the speed and spread of this attack is breathtaking.
In little more than an hour, dozens of settlers had fanned out across the hills. We watched as they broke into an isolated building, and methodically set fire to vehicles and homes....

Rep. Greene: US Should Let Gaza Children In For Medical Treatment, Prosecute Israeli Child Predators
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said in a post on X on Tuesday that the US should allow wounded children from Gaza to enter the US for medical treatment and should also prosecute Israeli child sex predators.
The Georgia representative was referring to a recent State Department decision to block visas for Palestinians from Gaza in response to outrage from pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer over wounded Palestinian children arriving for medical treatment, and the case of Tom Alexandrovich , a senior Israeli cybersecurity official who was arrested in a sting operation in Nevada for attempting to lure a child for sexual purposes but was allowed to go back to Israel.
“We need to be the America that allows war torn children to come here for life saving surgeries and the America that never releases a foreign child sex predator that our great LEO’s caught,” Greene wrote. “But in this circumstance those war torn children are from Gaza and this foreign child sex predator is from Israel and works directly for Netanyahu.”
In recent weeks, Greene has been outspoken in her opposition to US military aid to Israel, and she has become the first Republican in Congress to label Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide. She has also pushed back strongly against attempts by the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC to smear her.
“Let me guess,” Greene wrote on Tuesday. “Would it be antisemitic to drag Netanyahu’s Cyber Executive Director back and prosecute this pos to the full extent of the law and at the same time let Palestinian kids who had their limbs and bodies blown apart receive surgeries in America?”
