A Reuters investigation found 40 distinct sites of killings, looting and arson during three days of sectarian massacres following an Assad loyalist insurgency.

A Reuters investigation has pieced together how the massacres unfolded, identifying a chain of command leading from the attackers directly to men who serve alongside Syria’s new leaders in Damascus...
The Reuters findings come as the Trump administration is gradually lifting sanctions on Syria that date back to Assad’s rule. The rapprochement is an awkward one for Washington: Syria’s new government is led by a now-dissolved Islamist faction, formerly known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, which was previously al-Qaeda’s Syria branch, known as the Nusra Front.
The group, formerly led by new Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been under U.N. sanctions since 2014. Al-Sharaa, a Sunni Muslim like the majority of Syrians, became president in January after leading a surprise offensive that culminated in the collapse of Assad’s government and the capture of Damascus.
At least a dozen factions now under the new government’s command, including foreigners, took part in the March killings, Reuters found. Nearly half of them have been under international sanctions for years for human rights abuses, including killings, kidnapping, and sexual assaults.

Trump Signs Executive Order Ending Most Syria Sanctions
The US president cited the 'positive actions' of an extremist-led government responsible for the mass killing and disappearances of hundreds of Alawite civilians on Syria's coast
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 30 June lifting a majority of Washington's sanctions regime against Syria, citing “the positive actions taken by the new Syrian government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.”
The order also calls for US officials to “ take all appropriate action with respect to the designation of Al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other aliases, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization” and “Abu Mohammad al‑Julani, commonly known as Ahmad al-Sharaa, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.”
The executive order is scheduled to take effect on 1 July.
“Today’s actions . . . will end the country’s isolation from the international financial system, setting the stage for global commerce and galvanising investments from its neighbours in the region, as well as from the United States,” Brad Smith, acting under secretary of the office of terrorism and financial intelligence at the US Treasury Department told reporters on Tuesday.
However, the sweeping order maintains sanctions on former president Bashar al-Assad and his family as well as “ISIS or other terrorist organizations, human rights abusers, those linked to chemical weapons or proliferation-related activities, or other persons that threaten the peace, security, or stability of the United States, Syria, and its neighbors.”

Lebanon Seeks Israeli Withdrawal 'Guarantees' As US Demands Hezbollah Disarmament
Hezbollah’s leadership has vowed to confront Israel if the Lebanese state fails to secure its withdrawal diplomatically
Lebanon is seeking guarantees that Israel will completely withdraw its forces currently occupying the country’s south, a Lebanese official told AFP on 30 June.
US envoy Tom Barrack visited Beirut earlier this month and is expected back in Lebanon in mid-July. According to the official, Barrack presented during his visit a demand that the Lebanese government formally commit to starting the process of disarming Hezbollah.
The anonymous official said Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, President Joseph Aoun, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri are “preparing a response” to the US demand.
Upon Barrack’s return to Lebanon in the coming weeks, Lebanese officials “will demand a halt to Israeli violations of the ceasefire, Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the release of prisoners (detained during the war) and the demarcation of the border,” the official went on to say.
“Among the [US President Donald] Trump administration's demands are the complete disarmament of Hezbollah, economic reforms, and closer ties between Lebanon and Syria,” Lebanese officials... on 30 June.

US-Israeli Attacks Caused ‘Serious Damage’ To Nuclear Sites: Iran
Officials have acknowledged the damage of Washington and Tel Aviv’s attacks, but stress that airstrikes cannot destroy the Iranian nuclear program
Iranian government spokeswoman Fatima Mohajerani said during a press conference on 1 July that the country’s nuclear sites sustained “serious damage” from Israeli and US attacks.
“Iran’s nuclear sites have suffered serious damage in the military attacks by the Israeli regime and the US,” the spokeswoman said.
She also reiterated that no new round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington has been planned.
“Israeli attacks on Iran caused damages to 3,500 residential buildings, including 332 dwellings in Tehran,” she said, adding that “935 Iranians have been martyred in the 12-day war, including 140 women and children, while over 5,600 others have been injured.”
In an interview with CBS released hours earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that no talks have been planned, stressing that diplomacy cannot take place unless there are guarantees.

❗️UN: Only 4.6% of Gaza’s farmland remains usable amid forced starvation threat
A joint assessment by UNOSAT and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reveals that just 4.6% of Gaza’s cropland is currently cultivable, as widespread destruction and access restrictions decimate the enclave’s food production.
The report found that over 80% of farmland, more than 12,500 hectares, has been damaged, and nearly 78% is inaccessible to farmers. Greenhouses and water sources have also been devastated, with 71% of greenhouses and 83% of agricultural wells damaged or destroyed.
FAO’s deputy director-general, Beth Bechdol, called the destruction “a collapse of Gaza’s agrifood system and lifelines,” warning that rebuilding will demand massive investment and long-term international support. The findings come as famine looms over Gaza’s 2.1 million residents, following 19 months of war, siege, and mass displacement.
