Israel's defense industry reached a new milestone in 2024, with annual arms exports surging to a record $14.8 billion, marking the fourth consecutive year of growth, even as calls for boycotts over the war in Gaza intensified across Europe.
According to figures released on 5 June by Israel's Defense Ministry, arms exports rose 13 percent compared to 2023, driven largely by European countries increasing defense budgets in response to Russia's war in Ukraine. Defense exports now account for nearly 10 percent of all Israeli exports and nearly a quarter of goods exports.
Despite growing political opposition to Israeli military actions in Gaza, 54 percent of all Israeli defense exports in 2024 were sold to European countries, up sharply from 35 percent the previous year. Sales to Europe totaled $8 billion, nearly doubling from 2023, as European governments rushed to bolster air defense and missile systems amid concerns about a future war with Russia.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the export boom as “a direct result of the successes of the IDF and the defense industries against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis [Ansarallah] in Yemen, the Ayatollah regime in Iran, and in other arenas.”

Ross Ulbricht Got A $31 Million Donation From A Dark Web Dealer, Crypto Tracers Suspect
Crypto-tracing firm Chainalysis says the mysterious 300-bitcoin donation to the pardoned Silk Road creator appears to have come from someone associated with a different defunct black market: AlphaBay.
When Ross Ulbricht received a $31 million bitcoin donation last weekend from an unknown source, many observers saw it as more than a very nice welcome-home gift. Rumors swirled that the creator of the Silk Road, less than five months after receiving a pardon from Donald Trump that saved him from a lifetime in prison, was sending himself a trove of his stashed criminal proceeds from his days running the dark web's first black market more than a decade prior.
Now cryptocurrency tracing investigators say they've arrived at a stranger explanation: The money wasn't originally Ulbricht's, and didn't come from the Silk Road. Instead, they suspect it came from a different long-defunct dark-web black market: AlphaBay .
The crypto tracing firm Chainalysis tells WIRED that, based on blockchain analysis, it has tied the origin of the 300 bitcoins sent to Ulbricht on Sunday to someone involved in AlphaBay, a dark web market that sold a wide variety of drugs and cybercriminal contraband from 2014 to 2017 and eventually grew to be 10 times the size of the Silk Road, according to the FBI.
Chainalysis says the funds appear to have emerged from AlphaBay around 2016 and 2017. Given the amount of the donation, Chainalysis suggests it might have come from someone who acted as a large-scale seller on the market. “We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these funds originated in AlphaBay,” says Phil Larratt, Chainalysis's director of investigations and a former official at the UK's National Crime Agency. “Looking at the amount, that would suggest they came from someone who was possibly a vendor on AlphaBay back in the early days.”...
Prior to Chainalysis’ finding that the $31 million donation appears to have originated at AlphaBay, the independent crypto-tracing investigator known as ZachXBT had already posted to his account on X his own findings that the money didn't appear to have come from the Silk Road. ZachXBT found that, despite the donor's use of multiple Bitcoin “mixers” that take in users' coins and return others to obfuscate their trail on the blockchain, he was able to trace the funds to an address that had been flagged in Chainalysis’ software tool Reactor as tied to illicit activity. Crypto-tracing firm Chainalysis says the mysterious 300-bitcoin donation to the pardoned Silk Road creator appears to have come from someone associated with a different defunct black market: AlphaBay.
When Ross Ulbricht received a $31 million bitcoin donation last weekend from an unknown source, many observers saw it as more than a very nice welcome-home gift. Rumors swirled that the creator of the Silk Road, less than five months after receiving a pardon from Donald Trump that saved him from a lifetime in prison, was sending himself a trove of his stashed criminal proceeds from his days running the dark web's first black market more than a decade prior.
Now cryptocurrency tracing investigators say they've arrived at a stranger explanation: The money wasn't originally Ulbricht's, and didn't come from the Silk Road. Instead, they suspect it came from a different long-defunct dark-web black market: AlphaBay .
The crypto tracing firm Chainalysis tells WIRED that, based on blockchain analysis, it has tied the origin of the 300 bitcoins sent to Ulbricht on Sunday to someone involved in AlphaBay, a dark web market that sold a wide variety of drugs and cybercriminal contraband from 2014 to 2017 and eventually grew to be 10 times the size of the Silk Road, according to the FBI.
Chainalysis says the funds appear to have emerged from AlphaBay around 2016 and 2017. Given the amount of the donation, Chainalysis suggests it might have come from someone who acted as a large-scale seller on the market. “We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these funds originated in AlphaBay,” says Phil Larratt, Chainalysis's director of investigations and a former official at the UK's National Crime Agency. “Looking at the amount, that would suggest they came from someone who was possibly a vendor on AlphaBay back in the early days.”...
Prior to Chainalysis’ finding that the $31 million donation appears to have originated at AlphaBay, the independent crypto-tracing investigator known as ZachXBT had already posted to his account on X his own findings that the money didn't appear to have come from the Silk Road. Israel’s Attorney General announced that over 50,000 conscription orders will be issued to ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in July, intensifying the crisis over Haredi military service.
The move comes amid rising pressure on Netanyahu’s coalition, as both Shas and United Torah Judaism are now moving to dissolve the Knesset over the government’s failure to pass a draft exemption law.

Health workers cite starvation, medicine shortages, and a decimated hospital network as casualties mount
Doctors in Gaza have begun donating their own blood to treat patients after Israeli forces opened fire on crowds seeking food earlier this week, according to statements made by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) officials on 5 June.
On 3 June, Israeli forces killed at least 27 starving Palestinians near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) food distribution site in Rafah. Just two days earlier, Israeli troops had opened fire on civilians near another GHF aid point, resulting in at least 31 dead and over 170 injured.
The back-to-back incidents pushed Gaza’s already crippled healthcare system beyond its breaking point. With medical supplies running low and hospitals overwhelmed, doctors began donating their own blood to keep patients alive.
Around 100 staffers from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) protested outside the UN headquarters in Geneva, condemning the Israeli-backed aid distribution system in Gaza, which they say has led to chaos and civilian deaths.
MSF director Stephen Cornish stated that severe hunger has left many Palestinians too weak to donate blood, forcing medical personnel to intervene themselves.
