2012 Flashback: Papers Show Israel Counted Calories To Limit Food To Gaza During Blockade, Stirs Debate

Seeking to weaken the militants, it called for “severe restrictions” on civilians that included limitations on food.

Israel maintained that the blockade was necessary to weaken Hamas, but critics accused the government of taking aim at Gaza’s 1.5 million people.

Israel’s military calculated the minimum number of calories per day that Gaza Strip residents would need to avoid malnutrition during its embargo of goods into the restive territory from 2007 to 2010, court documents released Wednesday show.

Military officials said the so-called “red-lines” document was only a draft and was never used in setting policy or determining how much food it would allow into the Hamas-ruled coastal strip.

According to the document, Gazans on average needed 2,279 calories a day to survive. After subtracting for locally produced food and other factors, the document then estimated how many truckloads of food would be required to prevent malnutrition.

The paper, which the military fought for more than three years to keep classified, was only intended to ensure Gaza did not fall into a humanitarian crisis, officials said.

First Costco, Now Walmart? Major Retailers Now Offer Gold Bars

X users report that Walmart is the latest major retailer to offer a variety of gold products in its online store. This comes several months after membership-based wholesale retailer Costco began selling 1 oz. gold bars.

"Walmart is selling gold and silver. Are you awake yet? This is a financial change," one X user said.

Another X user said: "First Costco, Now Walmart."

..Walmart appears to be getting on the precious metals action following Costco CFO Richard Galanti's comments earlier this month about incredible gold bar demand among consumers:

"You've probably read about the fact that we're selling one-ounce gold bars. We sold over $100 million of gold during the quarter."

Galanti continued:

"When we load them [gold bars] on the site, they're typically gone within a few hours."

Costco's and Walmart's gold rush comes as gold prices have soared 14% since early October to a new record high of $2,088 this week. Gold's strength has been underpinned by traders' aggressive pricing of Federal Reserve rate cuts.

Earlier this month, a federal judge in the Southern District Court of New York ruled that four Americans who visited Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in London may proceed with their lawsuit in which they sued the CIA for violating their 4th Amendment right, which protects all Americans from unlawful searches and seizures.

Staff members of the embassy’s security firm, UC Global, were instructed by the CIA to spy on Mr. Assange and all of his visitors.

Israel Airstrikes Target Damascus Airport, One Day After Reopening

Israeli airstrikes are ongoing, more explosions were registered at Damascus International Airport 1723 EST.

At approximately 1513 EST, initial reports indicated several explosions in Damascus, Syria. By 1530 Syrian state owned media reported that Israeli airstrikes had targeted a Syrian army radar site Tal al-Sahn in Al-suwayda.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that Israeli airstrikes had targeted both Syrian military air defense systems at that site and Damascus airport.

It is important to note that the Damascus International Airport only opened yesterday, and the first departing flight after nearly 65 days of repairs from previous Israeli strikes, was an Al-Sham Wings Company plane that flew to Moscow.

China, Iraq Begin Construction of New City Near Baghdad

Iraq’s government seeks to build 15 new cities in Iraq in partnership with Chinese firms

Iraq broke ground on 29 December on 30,000 housing units near Baghdad, as part of a $2 billion project in partnership with Chinese firms to build five new cities across Iraq, Bloomberg reported on 29 December.

The government of Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani is seeking to build 250,000 to 300,000 housing units for poor and middle-class families. The new city on the outskirts of Baghdad will include universities, commercial centers, schools and health centers and should be completed in four to five years...

Contracts to build four more cities are expected to be awarded soon and another 10 will be announced next year...

Chinese firms have increased their presence in Iraq in recent years, in part due to a deal between Baghdad and Beijing.

....China has accelerated its investment in Iraq and other West Asian nations as part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) announced in 2013.

That should give the authorities pause and make them rethink the strategy – but have they? NO.

It arises now that London Mayor Khan has hired a ‘goon squad of thugs – aggressive men dressed in black, with face tattoos and wearing skeleton balaclavas – to oppress the citizens in order to allegedly protect his hated ULEZ cameras while filming everything with body cameras.

The Transit for London agency (TfL) claims that the guards are held to ‘high standards of professionalism’ and that they were necessary to protect ULEZ cameras from the so-called ‘Blade Runners’.

Self-proclaimed ‘freedom fighters’, the ‘Blade Runners’ have channeled the widespread hatred for the expanded ULEZ, and have been successfully targeting the cameras, gaining something of a folk hero status by a sympathetic population.

‘Enough is Enough’: Neighbors in Pender County Express Concerns About Discolored Tap Water

Neighbors in the Emerald Ridge neighborhood in Pender County say they’ve dealt with ongoing issues with their water for years, saying the tap water is discolored and ruins clothes and appliances.

Now, many neighbors are taking action, reaching out to county commissioners, the water company and state representatives to bring clean drinking water to their homes.

...Gaetz’s letter highlights the EPA’s unprecedented attempt to put Berkey out of business. Gaetz requested the EPA provide specific documents to his office showing the process the EPA used to determine its actions.

“...Americans are increasingly unhealthy and their water filled with contaminants, such as endocrine disrupters, heavy metals, and “forever” chemicals, such as PFAS, the EPA should be pursuing policies within its regulatory authority that incentivize increased use of water-filtration systems, not less,” the letter states.

“The EPA must end its attack on Berkey Water Systems immediately and focus on the job it was created to do – keep Americans safe – a job Berkey Water Systems has arguably done more effectively.”

Judge Rules Assange Visitors May Sue CIA For Allegedly Violating Privacy

A federal judge ruled that four American attorneys and journalists, who visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange while he was in the Ecuador embassy in London, may sue the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for their role in the alleged copying of the contents of their electronic devices.

The Americans sufficiently alleged that the CIA and CIA Director Mike Pompeo—through the Spanish security company UC Global and its director David Morales—“violated their reasonable expectation of privacy” under the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Richard Roth, attorney for the four Americans, reacted, "We are thrilled that the court rejected the CIA’s efforts to silence the plaintiffs, who merely seek to expose the CIA’s attempt to carry out Pompeo’s vendetta against WikiLeaks."
