Intercept Exclusive: Israeli Military Censor Bans Reporting on These 8 Subjects

The highly unusual, English-language order for the Gaza war breaks from the secretive and informal way IDF censorship normally works.

Weapons the Israel Defense Forces, security cabinet leaks, and stories about people held hostage by Hamas — these are some of the eight subjects the media are forbidden from reporting in Israel, according to a document obtained by The Intercept.

The document, a censorship order issued by the Israeli military to the media as part of its war on Hamas, has not been previously reported. The memo, written in English, was an unusual move for the IDF’s censor, which has been part of the Israel military for more than seven decades.

“I haven’t ever seen instructions like this sent from the censor aside from general notices broadly telling outlets to comply, and even then it was only sent to certain people,” said Michael Omer-Man, a former editor-in-chief of the Israel’s +972 Magazine and today the director of research for Israel–Palestine at Democracy in the Arab World Now, or DAWN, a U.S. advocacy group.

Titled “Operation ‘Swords of Iron’ Israeli Chief Censor Directive to the Media,” the order is not dated, but its reference to Operation Swords of Iron — the name of Israel’s current military operation in Gaza — makes clear that it was issued sometime after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel. The order is signed by the chief censor of the Israel Defense Forces, Brig. Gen. Kobi Mandelblit. (The Israeli Military Censor did not respond to a request for comment on the memo.)

The document was provided to The Intercept by a source who himself was given a copy by the Israeli military. An identical document appears onOpens in a new tab the Israeli government’s website.

“In light of the current security situation and the intensive media coverage, we wish to encourage you to submit to the Censorship all materials dealing with the activities of the Israeli Defense Forces (I.D.F.) and the Israeli security forces prior to their broadcast,” the order says. “Please update your staff of the content of this letter, with an emphasis on the news desk and field reporters.”

In Christmas Message, Pope Francis Begs For End To Israel’s Gaza Campaign, Decries ‘Appalling Harvest’ Of Civilian Deaths

- Francis devoted his Christmas Day blessing to a call for world peace, noting the biblical story of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem sent a message of peace

- Pope Francis also blasted the weapons industry and its ‘instruments of death’ that fuel wars

Pope Francis said in his Christmas message on Monday that children dying in wars, including in Gaza, are the “little Jesuses of today” and that Israeli strikes there were reaping an “appalling harvest” of innocent civilians.

In his Christmas Day “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and world) address, Francis also called the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas militants “abominable” and again appealed for the release of around 100 hostages still being held in Gaza.

Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to thousands of people in the square below, he took another swipe at the armaments industry, saying it ultimately controlled the “puppet-strings of war”.

The 87-year-old Francis, celebrating the 11th Christmas of his pontificate, called for an end to conflicts, political, social or military, in places including Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and he defended the rights of migrants around the world.
“How many innocents are being slaughtered in our world! In their mothers’ wombs, in odysseys undertaken in desperation and in search of hope, in the lives of all those little ones whose childhood has been devastated by war. They are the little Jesuses of today,” he said.
He gave particular attention to the Holy Land, including Gaza, where, according to Palestinian health officials, Israeli air strikes killed at least 78 people in one of the besieged enclave’s deadliest nights(Christmas Night) of Israel’s 11-week-old battle with Hamas.

Righting A Wrong: Burying Decades Of US-led Wars

Today's global conflicts – whether in Eastern Europe, West Asia, or East Asia – are spawned by a fading US hegemon desperately clinging to power.

“One era is ending, a new one is beginning, and the decisions that we make now will shape the future for decades to come.”

With these words, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken defined the "turning point" of the American era, the transition from one world order to another.

“In this pivotal time, America’s global leadership is not a burden. It’s a necessity to safeguard our freedom, our democracy, and our security,” Blinken said in his address to the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in September.

Official US documents, including last year’s National Security Strategy, underscore Washington's conviction that waiting is a luxury it cannot afford; that it “will act decisively” to maintain its global leadership. As such, the US involvement in conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the militarization in Southeast Asia, must be seen through this lens of international dynamics.

Broadly, tensions in Africa and Asia are interconnected with the west's frenzied initiatives to maintain a dominant position and decisive role in the new multipolar order.

...It is also telling that the US-led multination task force, Operation Guardian of Prosperity in the Red Sea, is already facing major set-backs since its recent inception, with some members pulling out and others choosing to remain unnamed.

...It was a very foreseeable consequence that countries caught in the middle, and those watching on the sidelines, might start realizing it is not in their interests to go along with and help maintain US hegemony - which they suffer under, and comes at their expense - or inevitably will.

Countries started realizing that maybe it isn’t in their interest to be a slave vassal state that exists to martyr itself at the feet of the US empire in its vain attempt to maintain global dominance…. The global south has gradually been coming to realize that maybe their respective countries, whose governments are naturally entitled to make decisions in the best interests of their people - rather than being forced to cede sovereignty and decision making to other countries or transnational corporations that treat them as vassals/slaves rather than equals, they can instead coalesce around a new axis/world order for protection from, or simply as a hedge against, the US world police bully...

...to address the multi-dimensionality of things... just because the US empire treats the world like shit, doesn’t mean that BRICS governments are coming to save the day...people need to be wary of a meta “savior narrative” and false dichotomy between two world orders that may be, hell, probably are, nothing more than 2 sides of the same globalist coin...

Many view the bloc’s challenging of US hegemony and the idea of returning to hard money as evidence that the bloc itself is going to run an agenda counter to that of the Western axis, that BRICS governments are going to offer a reprieve to the pervasive tyranny and exploitation the US-centric world has experienced so much of.

The question is: Will there be a change of power, or just a change in power?

Milei's Government Pays IMF Without Tapping China Currency Swap

On Thursday, Argentina's new government sent to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) its scheduled debt payment, thanks to a loan from the CAF - the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. In doing so, the government of Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, avoided tapping into a currency swap line Beijing was preparing to make available, with strings attached.

Since Milei's victory on November 19, and his inauguration on December 10, intense maneuvers between Buenos Aires and Beijing appear to have taken place, largely under the radar.

Among the dignitaries attending Milei's inauguration was a special envoy dispatched by Chinese communist leader Xi Jinping. Milei received Xi's envoy, Wu Weihua, accompanied by China's Ambassador to Argentina Wang Wei, on December 11.

The meeting was cordial, by all accounts, and prompted Milei to send a letter to Xi the next day. While the content of Milei's letter has not been made public, Argentine media indicated that it included language about the currency swap between the two countries Milei's predecessor had put in place...
