Dozens Killed As India, Pakistan Exchange Heaviest Fire In Decades

Pakistan says its armed forces downed five attacking Indian planes and drones

India launched airstrikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir on 7 May, triggering the worst military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in over two decades.

In response, Pakistan claimed it had shot down five Indian fighter jets, while both sides exchanged heavy artillery fire across the de facto border in Kashmir.

Indian military officials said the strikes targeted nine “terrorist infrastructure” sites in Pakistan, including locations linked to extremist groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Four sites were in Punjab province and five in Pakistani Kashmir.

New Delhi claimed the strikes were preemptive, aimed at disrupting further attacks after 26 Hindu tourists were killed in Indian Kashmir last month.

Pakistan denied any connection to the April 22 attack and said the Indian strikes targeted six civilian locations, killing at least 26 people and wounding 46. A spokesperson for the Pakistani military called the strikes a blatant violation of sovereignty and vowed retaliation “at a time, place, and manner of its choosing.”

In a statement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned what he called “an act of war” and promised a robust response. The Pakistani military also claimed to have downed five Indian jets and drones, although Indian officials did not confirm the losses. Local sources in Indian Kashmir told Reuters that three Indian fighter jets had crashed during the night, with all pilots hospitalized.

Footage shared on local media showed debris from at least one aircraft scattered across a field, though the authenticity of the images could not be independently verified.

The cross-border violence continued with intense shelling in Kashmir. Indian police reported 10 civilians killed and 48 injured on their side, while Pakistani officials said six people died in the shelling on their territory.

The escalation, which India dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” has sparked fears of a broader conflict. The operation marks the first time India has attacked targets in Pakistan’s Punjab province since the 1971 war.

US President Donald Trump described the conflict as “a shame” and called for restraint. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly urged both countries to maintain communication and avoid further escalation.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence in 1947, two of them over Kashmir, a disputed region both nations claim in full but control in part.
