Rand Paul Blasts Away At Antisemitism Speech Bill

Controversial measure comes at a time when the government is equating criticism of Israel with threats to 'US foreign policy'

In President Donald Trump’s first 100 days, his administration has arrested and detained, without due process, visa holders and other non-citizens in the U.S. for speaking out against Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

That’s not how the administration frames it, but that is the connective tissue in each of the cases.

On Wednesday, the same day Palestinian Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi was released on bail pending a Habeas hearing after a judge determined that he did not pose a risk to the public, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky blasted the Congress for pushing new speech restrictions, particularly antisemitism measures that would restrict criticism of Israel on school campuses.

“We’re either a free society governed by the Constitution, or we’re not. We need to challenge hate with reason, not censorship.”

Paul was specifically addressing the Antisemitism Awareness Act which would codify a Trump-era executive order declaring that antisemitism is a prohibited form of discrimination in schools and universities, and would use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism in assessing cases of antisemitic discrimination through the Department of Education.

Iran, Iraq Move Forward With Plans To Boost Trade To $25bn Annually

The plans include finalizing the Shalamcheh-Basra railway project, an approximately $100mn initiative which could significantly enhance trade

Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran are advancing plans to boost bilateral trade to $25 billion annually, which would more than double the current levels.

This initiative includes finalizing agreements on the Shalamcheh–Basra railway and establishing joint free trade and industrial zones along their border.

A recent Iraqi delegation to Tehran, led by Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani’s advisor Hazem al-Khalidi, focused on these projects, which are expected to enhance cross-border commerce and infrastructure.

The 36-kilometer railway, once completed, will connect Basra to Iran’s rail network, facilitating the transport of up to three million passengers per year and supporting the development of border markets and industrial zones.

The completion of the Shalamcheh-Basra Railway project could also significantly boost trade by reducing transit costs by up to 20 percent.

Police And Prosecutors’ Details Shared With Israel During UK Protests Inquiry, Papers Suggest

Exclusive: Documents indicate government gave embassy contact details while arms factory protest was investigated

The UK government shared contact details of counter-terrorism police and prosecutors with the Israeli embassy during an investigation into protests at an arms factory, official documents suggest, raising concerns about foreign interference.

An email was sent on 9 September last year by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to Daniela Grudsky Ekstein, Israel’s deputy ambassador to the UK, with the subject matter “CPS/SO15 [Crown Prosecution Service/counterterrorism police] contact details”.

Last August, 10 Palestine Action activists were arrested under the Terrorism Act after a protest at an Israeli weapons factory, and in November a further eight were arrested under the act in relation to the same incident. The email sent by Nicola Smith, the head of international law at the AGO, and obtained through a freedom of information (FoI) request, was sent 11 days after she had met Grudsky Ekstein. It was redacted apart from the subject matter.

Lydia​ Dagostino, from Kellys Solicitors, who represents some Palestine Action activists, said: “The information disclosed in response to an FoI request clearly raises questions and needs further investigation.

“Why, for example, did the Attorney General’s Office provide the contact details for the Crown Prosecution Service, an independent body, to the Israelis?​ What further exchanges followed and was there discussions about ongoing criminal prosecutions?​”

US, Israel Led Record-Breaking Surge In Military Spending In 2024

Israel boosted its military spending by 65 percent, reaching 8.8 percent of its GDP, to finance its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza

Global military expenditure surged to a record $2.7 trillion in 2024, marking a 9.4 percent increase over the previous year – the steepest annual rise since the end of the Cold War, according to new data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Military budgets rose across all regions, with especially sharp increases in Europe and West Asia, driven by the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The five largest military spenders — the US, China, Russia, Germany, and India – accounted for 60 percent of total global spending. The US alone spent $997 billion, or 37 percent of the global total – dedicating a significant portion of its budget to modernizing its military capabilities and nuclear arsenal to maintain strategic superiority over Russia and China.

Europe saw a particularly dramatic rise, with military spending increasing by 17 percent to $693 billion. Germany’s military expenditure rose by 28 percent to $88.5 billion, making it the largest spender in Western Europe and the fourth-largest worldwide, thanks largely to a €100 billion (around $107 billion) special defense fund established in 2022. Poland and Sweden also posted significant increases, with spending up by 31 percent and 34 percent, respectively.

Ukraine had the highest military burden in the world in 2024, with military spending amounting to 34 percent of its GDP. All of Ukraine’s tax revenues were absorbed by defense needs, while social and economic spending relied entirely on foreign aid, including $7.7 billion from Germany.

In West Asia, military expenditure rose by 15 percent, reaching $243 billion. Israel led the regional increase, boosting its military spending by 65 percent to $46.5 billion amid its wars on Gaza and Lebanon. Israel's military burden rose to 8.8 percent of GDP, the second highest in the world.

Lebanon, despite ongoing political and economic instability, raised its defense budget by 58 percent to $635 million.

Iran’s military spending fell by 10 percent in real terms to $7.9 billion in 2024 despite its support for regional allies resisting Israel, including Hezbollah and Yemen. The impact of sanctions on Iran severely limited its capacity to increase spending.

Elsewhere, China continued its large-scale military modernization, spending an estimated $314 billion in 2024, with developments in stealth aircraft, unmanned systems, and a rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal. Japan also raised its military budget by 21 percent to $55.3 billion, further heightening concerns of a potential arms race in the Asia-Pacific region.

SIPRI researchers warned that as governments prioritize military security, often at the expense of social and economic programs, societies could face significant long-term consequences. With over 100 countries increasing their military budgets, 2024 marked the tenth consecutive year of rising global military expenditure – a trend that analysts expect will persist amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

❗️US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that Iran must "walk away" from enriching uranium and developing long-range missiles, and should permit American inspectors access to its facilities.

"They have to walk away from sponsoring terrorists, they have to walk away from helping the Houthis, they have to walk away from building long-range missiles that have no purpose to exist other than having nuclear weapons, and they have to walk away from enrichment," Rubio said in a Fox News interview.

Following a meeting in Baabda Palace, the Lebanese Higher Defense Council issued the following statement:

"As part of the ongoing security developments in Syria, the President of the Republic emphasized the need to contain any fallout that could negatively impact Lebanon's internal stability or exacerbate the Syrian refugee crisis.

Following this, military and security leaders presented updates on the general situation across Lebanon, particularly regarding recent rocket launches from Lebanese territory toward the occupied lands. The suspects involved have been arrested, and the necessary judicial procedures are underway.

In this context, the President stressed that Lebanon must not become a platform for destabilization, while affirming the importance of the Palestinian cause. He warned against dragging Lebanon into wars it cannot afford and exposing it to danger. The Prime Minister echoed this, underscoring the need to surrender illegal weapons in line with the National Accord Document and the government’s ministerial statement. He further stated that groups such as Hamas must not be allowed to compromise Lebanon's security, affirming that the country’s territorial integrity is paramount. At the same time, Lebanon remains committed to the Palestinian people's right to self-determination under international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.

After reviewing the situation and its implications, the Higher Defense Council issued the following recommendation to the Council of Ministers:

To issue a warning to Hamas against using Lebanese territory for any activities that threaten Lebanon’s national security, stressing that the state will take the toughest measures necessary to put an end to any violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

The Council also noted that legal proceedings against those detained in connection with the March 22 and 28 rocket attacks will begin early next week, and all individuals found to be involved will be prosecuted based on the results of the ongoing investigation."

Israeli Drone Bombs Gaza Freedom Flotilla Near Malta Coast

The attack comes as a food crisis in Gaza is worsening due to Israel’s total siege and closure of all border crossings

An Israeli drone bombed a Freedom Flotilla aid vessel that was en route to Gaza early on 2 May, blowing a hole through the ship, causing a fire, and putting it at risk of sinking.

The ship was transporting humanitarian aid, 12 crew members, four civilian passengers, and dozens of rights activists. It was in international waters off Malta and had reportedly set off from Tunisia.

The Maltese government released a statement confirming that the crewmembers were brought to safety and that the ship remains in international waters. No injuries were reported.

“At 00:23 Maltese time, a Freedom Flotilla ship was subjected to a drone attack. The front of the vessel was targeted twice, resulting in a fire and a breach in the hull,” the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said in a statement earlier, adding that an SOS distress signal was sent.

CNN cited a Freedom Flotilla Coalition media official saying the strike caused the vessel to start sinking.

Sources told the channel that the Abraham Accords are agreements with countries whose lands are not under Israeli occupation, and therefore Syria cannot participate unless the occupation of its territory ends.
