Massive Wildfires Rage For Second Day As Israel At Standstill
Tel Aviv has been accused of ignoring years of warnings about its lack of preparedness to deal with the threat of wildfires
Massive fires continue to blaze across areas surrounding occupied Jerusalem for the second day in a row, after major roads were closed and thousands of Israelis were evacuated from several settlements.
Some roads have been reopened and settlers have been permitted to return, as Israeli firefighting services work to contain the fires.
“All routes have been reopened to traffic,” Israeli police said in a statement. Over 160 ground teams and a dozen aircraft have been deployed to fight the flames. Dozens of people including firefighters suffered from smoke inhalation and burns.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on 1 May that 18 people have been arrested on suspicion of arson.
...Despite Netanyahu's claims, police sources told Hebrew media that only three have been detained on suspicion of arson. The sources said that the three are suspected of trying to set other fires and are not involved in the massive fires near Jerusalem.
At least 19,000 dunams of land, including entire parks, forests, and nature reserves have been engulfed by flames. Thousands of acres of land have been destroyed and several areas are still ablaze.

While speaking at the annual 'Independence Day' International Bible Quiz today, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that while returning the Israeli captives in Gaza is a very important goal, "in war there is an ultimate goal – and this ultimate goal is victory over our enemies."
Israel's Hostages and Missing Families Forum responded to his speech, saying that the captives' return is not less important, but rather "the supreme goal that should guide the Israeli government."
The forum went on to say that the captives' families were "concerned," as Netanyahu aligns himself with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, while the "overwhelming majority" of the Israeli public want the return of the captives above all else.
"I understand that Netanyahu has more important goals than bringing back my sick son, who has been chained up for a year and a half and drinking water from the toilet in the Nazi tunnels in Gaza ... Because of this, it is clear to me that in order to bring back my son - my goal from this moment on is to oust Netanyahu from power," said Einav Zangauker, mother of Gaza captive Matan Zangauker.

According to US officials who spoke with multiple western media outlets, Waltz and Wong are expected to step down after “losing the trust” of other officials and lacking support within the White House.

Khartoum accuses the UAE of complicity in genocide for supporting the Rapid Support Forces militia in its war against the Sudanese army
A UN panel of experts is investigating how mortar rounds exported from Bulgaria to the UAE in 2019 ended up in the hands of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, according to documents reviewed by Reuters.
The investigation centers around 81 mm mortar rounds seized from an RSF convoy in Sudan's North Darfur region in November 2024.
Photos and videos posted online by pro-government militia members following the seizure clearly show the serial number on the mortars, which matches those that Bulgaria confirmed were exported to the UAE military. Bulgaria has stated that it has never authorized the re-export of the munitions to a third party, including Sudan. “We adamantly declare that the Bulgarian competent authority has not issued an export license for defense-related products to Sudan,” the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry told Reuters.
The UAE has denied accusations that it is fueling Sudan's conflict by arming the RSF, which has been engaged in a brutal war with the Sudanese army since 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
The UAE cited the most recent UN expert panel report, submitted to the Security Council in April, to defend its position. The report – still unpublished – documents the November seizure but does not attribute the origin of the weapons. However, correspondence between the UN panel and UAE officials suggests that the investigation into the Gulf country's possible involvement is ongoing.

UAE Thwarts Arms Smuggling Plot For Sudanese Army As UN Probes Emirati Involvement In Darfur Genocide
Both the army and the RSF have been accused of committing war crimes in a conflict that has displaced millions
The UAE government says it has foiled a plan to smuggle weapons and military equipment to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Emirati Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi said the smuggling attempt involved millions of rounds of ammunition and a private aircraft.
“The security services succeeded in preventing the transfer of a quantity of military equipment to the Sudanese Armed Forces following the arrest of members of a cell involved in unauthorized mediation, brokering and illicit trafficking of military equipment,” he said, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Shamsi said it “represents a severe breach of the state’s security by turning its territory into a hub for illicit military trade targeting a country suffering from internal conflict.” A probe revealed that Sudanese military leaders were involved in the plot.
The delivery included AK-47s, ammunition, and grenades worth millions of dollars.

“The security services succeeded in preventing the transfer of a quantity of military equipment to the Sudanese Armed Forces following the arrest of members of a cell involved in unauthorized mediation, brokering and illicit trafficking of military equipment,” he said, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Shamsi said it “represents a severe breach of the state’s security by turning its territory into a hub for illicit military trade targeting a country suffering from internal conflict.” A probe revealed that Sudanese military leaders were involved in the plot.
The delivery included AK-47s, ammunition, and grenades worth millions of dollars.

In President Donald Trump’s first 100 days, his administration has arrested and detained, without due process, visa holders and other non-citizens in the U.S. for speaking out against Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
That’s not how the administration frames it, but that is the connective tissue in each of the cases.
On Wednesday, the same day Palestinian Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi was released on bail pending a Habeas hearing after a judge determined that he did not pose a risk to the public, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky blasted the Congress for pushing new speech restrictions, particularly antisemitism measures that would restrict criticism of Israel on school campuses.
“We’re either a free society governed by the Constitution, or we’re not. We need to challenge hate with reason, not censorship.”
Paul was specifically addressing the Antisemitism Awareness Act which would codify a Trump-era executive order declaring that antisemitism is a prohibited form of discrimination in schools and universities, and would use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism in assessing cases of antisemitic discrimination through the Department of Education.

This initiative includes finalizing agreements on the Shalamcheh–Basra railway and establishing joint free trade and industrial zones along their border.
A recent Iraqi delegation to Tehran, led by Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani’s advisor Hazem al-Khalidi, focused on these projects, which are expected to enhance cross-border commerce and infrastructure.
The 36-kilometer railway, once completed, will connect Basra to Iran’s rail network, facilitating the transport of up to three million passengers per year and supporting the development of border markets and industrial zones.
The completion of the Shalamcheh-Basra Railway project could also significantly boost trade by reducing transit costs by up to 20 percent.

US, Israel Led Record-Breaking Surge In Military Spending In 2024
Israel boosted its military spending by 65 percent, reaching 8.8 percent of its GDP, to finance its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza
Global military expenditure surged to a record $2.7 trillion in 2024, marking a 9.4 percent increase over the previous year – the steepest annual rise since the end of the Cold War, according to new data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Military budgets rose across all regions, with especially sharp increases in Europe and West Asia, driven by the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
The five largest military spenders — the US, China, Russia, Germany, and India – accounted for 60 percent of total global spending. The US alone spent $997 billion, or 37 percent of the global total – dedicating a significant portion of its budget to modernizing its military capabilities and nuclear arsenal to maintain strategic superiority over Russia and China.
Europe saw a particularly dramatic rise, with military spending increasing by 17 percent to $693 billion. Germany’s military expenditure rose by 28 percent to $88.5 billion, making it the largest spender in Western Europe and the fourth-largest worldwide, thanks largely to a €100 billion (around $107 billion) special defense fund established in 2022. Poland and Sweden also posted significant increases, with spending up by 31 percent and 34 percent, respectively.
Ukraine had the highest military burden in the world in 2024, with military spending amounting to 34 percent of its GDP. All of Ukraine’s tax revenues were absorbed by defense needs, while social and economic spending relied entirely on foreign aid, including $7.7 billion from Germany.
In West Asia, military expenditure rose by 15 percent, reaching $243 billion. Israel led the regional increase, boosting its military spending by 65 percent to $46.5 billion amid its wars on Gaza and Lebanon. Israel's military burden rose to 8.8 percent of GDP, the second highest in the world.
Lebanon, despite ongoing political and economic instability, raised its defense budget by 58 percent to $635 million.
Iran’s military spending fell by 10 percent in real terms to $7.9 billion in 2024 despite its support for regional allies resisting Israel, including Hezbollah and Yemen. The impact of sanctions on Iran severely limited its capacity to increase spending.
Elsewhere, China continued its large-scale military modernization, spending an estimated $314 billion in 2024, with developments in stealth aircraft, unmanned systems, and a rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal. Japan also raised its military budget by 21 percent to $55.3 billion, further heightening concerns of a potential arms race in the Asia-Pacific region.
SIPRI researchers warned that as governments prioritize military security, often at the expense of social and economic programs, societies could face significant long-term consequences. With over 100 countries increasing their military budgets, 2024 marked the tenth consecutive year of rising global military expenditure – a trend that analysts expect will persist amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
