🇷🇺 Russian Ruble Outperforms All Global Currencies Against the Dollar in 2025

Since the start of the year, the Russian ruble has recorded the strongest growth against the U.S. dollar among all major world currencies — even outperforming gold, according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s data shows that the ruble has surged 38% against the dollar in over-the-counter trading since January. By comparison, gold — widely seen as the world’s top safe-haven asset — has risen by 23% in the same period.

Other notable gains include the Swedish krona, which strengthened by 14%, and the Swiss franc by 11%. Silver also climbed 12%.

What makes the ruble’s rise particularly striking is that it’s happening despite falling oil prices — a development that typically weakens the Russian currency. Traditionally, lower oil revenues pressure the ruble as Russia adjusts its exchange rate to maintain stable budget income in ruble terms.

This year, however, the trend has reversed: oil prices are dropping, yet the ruble is gaining ground.

Analysts link this to growing investor confidence that the war in Ukraine may soon come to an end, boosting interest in Russian assets — especially government bonds. The ruble has shown a pattern of strengthening after positive news from peace negotiations and weakening after setbacks.

⭕️ US President Donald Trump said on Monday he believes Iran is deliberately stalling progress on the nuclear agreement, warning that, "Iran has to get rid of the concept of a nuclear weapon."—Or risk a potential attack on its nuclear sites.

"I think they're tapping us along," Trump told reporters, referring to recent talks in Oman between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and a senior Iranian official.

When asked if a US response includes a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump replied, "Of course it does."

He also suggested time was running out, claiming Iran is "fairly close" to building a nuclear weapon and needed to act quickly to avoid serious consequences.

‘New Page In History’: Lebanese PM Visits Damascus For Talks With Sharaa

Nawaf Salam and Ahmad al-Sharaa discussed several issues, including Syrian refugees in Lebanon, border security, and trade cooperation

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited Damascus on 14 April and met with Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa – the former Al-Qaeda chief known previously as Abu Mohammad al-Julani.

This visit will open a new page in the history of relations between the two countries, based on mutual respect, the restoration of trust, good neighborliness, the preservation of our two countries' sovereignty, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, because Syria's decision is for the Syrians and Lebanon's decision is for the Lebanese,” Salam said in the meeting.

Discussions were held with President Sharaa and Syrian officials regarding border control and crossings, preventing smuggling, and ultimately demarcating the land and sea borders,” the Lebanese prime minister’s media office said.

This was initiated during a meeting [last month] in Jeddah between the two countries' defense ministers, sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening security coordination to preserve the stability of both countries,” it added.

Salam was accompanied by Lebanese Defense Minister Michel Menassa, Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, and Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar.

4/10 - Washington 'Vetoes' Gulf Funds For Lebanon Reconstruction: Report

The World Bank estimates Lebanon needs $11 billion for reconstruction and recovery due to the ongoing Israeli war on the country

The US government has placed an “undeclared veto” on Gulf nations that offered financial support for the reconstruction of Lebanon until Israel's objectives in the country are met, according to diplomatic sources who spoke with Al-Akhbar.

Washington informed several Gulf states, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, that no financial support should be given to Lebanon or Syria “at this stage,” in what the Lebanese daily describes as a “maximum pressure campaign aimed at removing any obstacle to a settlement that ends the state of conflict with Israel – particularly by dismantling Hezbollah’s weapons – regardless of the consequences for Lebanon.

Other conditions for lifting the veto reportedly include the results of upcoming US-Iran nuclear talks and the repercussions of the escalating trade war with China.

Trump’s team sees resolving [West Asian] conflicts, particularly by incorporating Lebanon into the Abraham Accords, as a way to lock the region into the US sphere of influence and limit China’s foothold,” the report states.

Al-Akhbar's sources said they believe the veto could be extended until next year's parliamentary elections, aiming to prevent Hezbollah and the Amal Movement “from securing all Shia seats in parliament.

China Faces 245% Trump Tariff

The White House said China is facing up to a 245 percent tariff on imports to the U.S. "as a result of its retaliatory actions," as the trade war between the world's two largest economies continues to heat up.

The top potential tariff was referenced in a fact sheet published by the White House late on Tuesday. It accompanied an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that launched an investigation into the "national security risks posed by U.S. reliance on imported processed critical minerals and their derivative products."

A White House official told Newsweek the calculation reflects the maximum potential rate some Chinese goods could face, combining the reciprocal tariff, the fentanyl tariff, and existing Section 301 tariffs that go up to 100 percent.

Electric vehicles, for example, have outstanding Section 301 tariffs of 100 percent dating back to the Biden Administration, meaning these products would face a 245 percent rate in total.
