Syria, SDF Strike Deal To End Clashes Over Aleppo’s Strategic Tishreen Dam

The Kurdish militia and Turkish-backed factions have been engaged in heavy fighting over the dam since the fall of the former government

Damascus has reached an agreement with the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the strategic Tishreen Dam in the Aleppo countryside, which is Kurdish-held and has recently been the focal point of heavy clashes between Kurds and Turkish-backed militants.

"Syrian Arab Army forces and security forces entered into the Tishreen Dam ... to impose security in the region, under the agreement reached with the SDF," state news outlet SANA reported on Saturday.

SANA said the deal includes the formation of a joint force tasked with protecting the dam. It also calls for the withdrawal of Turkish-backed armed groups "that seek to disrupt this agreement." Many of these groups, part of what used to be known as Ankara’s proxy the Syrian National Army (SNA), are now incorporated within the armed forces of the new Syrian government.

The SDF reportedly withdrawn from Tishreen Dam.

According to a Kurdish source cited by AFP, the agreement stipulates that the dam will remain under Kurdish civilian administration.

Israel is "very optimistic" about ongoing deconfliction talks with Turkiye, which may allow Ankara to maintain a "limited" military base in Syria, the Times of Israel reported on 11 April...

A Turkish official speaking with The Times of Israel also spoke positively regarding cooperation between both countries in Syria...

Turkish intelligence strongly supported ISIS during the 14-year war to topple Syria's former President, Bashar al-Assad.

Earlier this month, Israel bombed several airbases in Syria, claiming it was a warning against Turkiye from establishing a "protectorate" in the country..

In July 2024, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened his country could intervene militarily in Israel's war on Gaza...

However, according to Turkish journalist and foreign policy expert Gulriz Ergoz, Israel and Turkiye are cooperating in Syria to "divide the spoils" after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad at the hands of the Sharaa and HTS in December.

Ergoz noted that Erdogan committed Turkiye to play its role in the Israel-led restructuring of West Asia that began under the influence of Jewish neoconservatives in the Bush administration some two decades ago...

After the victory of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2002, Erdogan stood in the White House and declared strategic alignment with the US "not only on Iraq but on many other issues," Ergoz noted.

By 2005, former US president George W. Bush was openly thanking him for his "strong support" for the project...

Ergoz added that despite public arguments with Israeli leaders – like Erdogan's famous "One Minute" confrontation with then-Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres at Davos in 2009 – his anti-Israel rhetoric has largely been directed at “domestic audiences while leaving Ankara's structural alliance with Tel Aviv untouched.”

Fifteen US Airstrikes Hit Yemen’s Marib Province, Amid Reports of Potential US Ground Invasion

Fifteen US airstrikes hit districts in Yemen’s Marib province on Monday, Yemen’s SABA news agency reported , as the daily US bombing campaign on the country continues.

Marib is in the eastern part of Houthi-controlled Yemen, which is where 80% of Yemenis live. The province was the site of heavy ground fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces in 2021 during the US-backed Saudi/UAE war on Yemen, which hasn’t officially ended but has been frozen since a 2022 ceasefire.

The 2022 ceasefire ended Saudi airstrikes on Yemen, but there have been occasional flare-ups on the ground , including in Marib, and Saudi shelling across the Saudi-Yemen border.

The US strikes on Marib come amid reports that the US and Saudi-backed government, which is based in Saudi Arabia, may be preparing forces for a ground assault against the Houthis, who are officially known as Ansar Allah. While the government’s leadership is based in Saudi Arabia, its allied forces are in the eastern and southern parts of Yemen.

Ahmed Hassan, a commentator based in Yemen, said in a post on X that the US attacks on Marib could be an indication that a ground offensive is imminent since the strikes hit areas where the Houthis have defensive lines.
