Former CIA analyst pleads guilty to leaking info on planned Israeli attack on Iran

A former CIA analyst pleaded guilty Friday to leaking information on a planned Israeli attack on Iran.

Asif Rahman, 34, was arrested by the FBI in November weeks after classified documents appeared on the Telegram messaging app.

He entered guilty pleas in federal court in Virginia to two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information related to the national defense, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Rahman, a CIA employee since 2016, abused his access to top-secret information by accessing, removing and printing out two documents related to Israel and a planned attack on Iran. He then shared them with people not authorized to receive them.

Two documents that surfaced on Telegram in October, attributed to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency, noted that Israel was still moving military assets in place to conduct a military strike in response to Iran’s blistering ballistic missile attack on Oct. 1.

Israel carried out a retaliatory attack on air defense systems and missile manufacturing facilities in Iran in late October. In court papers, the government has said the leak caused Israel to delay its attack plans...

Rahman was born in California and moved with his family when he was a child to Cincinnati, where he was a high school valedictorian, according to court papers submitted by his lawyer. He went to Yale University and graduated in three years. He and his wife now live in the D.C. metro area, along with his parents.

Trump Doesn’t Rule Out Military Intervention In Greenland — Again

U.S. president’s comments come on the heels of diplomatic tensions between Copenhagen and Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump hinted he could use military force to take over Greenland — in the latest sign of Washington's fixation with the autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.

“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100 percent,” Trump told NBC .

"There's a good possibility it could be done without military force," he said, adding however that "I don't take anything off the table."

On Friday, Greenland’s government announced a deal for a coalition between Greenland’s Democrats and other parties.

Trump's obsession with the strategic, mineral-rich island has grown stronger in the past weeks. He made the issue a top national security priority, and told journalists on Friday that “we have to have” the territory to secure the U.S.’s position in the Arctic.

The U.S. president's comments come after a week of diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Denmark, and on the heels of U.S. Vice President JD Vance's visit to Greenland.

Speaking from the U.S.’s Pituffik Space Base on Greenland’s northeastern coast on Friday, Vance said military intervention would not be needed if Greenlanders decide to break from Copenhagen and "cut a deal” with Washington.

Poll: 85% of Greenlanders Do Not Want to Be Part of the US — Reuters

An opinion poll indicated on Tuesday that 85% of Greenlanders do not wish their Arctic island - a semi-autonomous Danish territory - to become a part of the United States, Danish daily Berlingske reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier this month that Greenland was vital to U.S. security and Denmark should give up control of the strategically important island.
The survey by pollster Verian, commissioned by the Danish paper, showed only 6% of Greenlanders are in favour of becoming part of the U.S., with 9% undecided, Berlingske said.

Denmark said on Monday it would spend 14.6 billion crowns ($2.04 billion) on boosting its military presence in the Arctic.
Greenland - with a land mass larger than Mexico and a population of 57,000 - was granted broad self-governing autonomy in 2009, including the right to declare independence from Denmark through a referendum.

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has stepped up a push for independence, has repeatedly said the island is not for sale and that it is up to its people to decide their future.

The U.S. military has a permanent presence at the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, a strategic location for its ballistic missile early-warning system, as the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the island.
