Report: Trump Wants Zelensky To Move Toward Elections To Restart US Military Aid And Intel Sharing

The president also wants Ukraine to sign the minerals deal and make an effort toward peace with Russia

The Trump administration wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to move his country toward elections or consider stepping down as one of the requirements for the US to resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, NBC News reported on Sunday.

The report, which cited US officials, said the administration also wants to see a change in Zelensky’s attitude toward peace talks and the possibility of ceding territory to Russia and for Ukraine to sign the minerals deal that will give the US a piece of revenues made from Ukrainian rare earth minerals and other natural resources.

US and Ukrainian officials are meeting in Saudi Arabia this Tuesday and are expected to discuss such issues. So far, Zelensky’s public comments about being ready to work toward peace and sign the mineral deal haven’t been enough for the Trump administration to restart aid and intelligence sharing.

Ukrainian elections appear to be a major sticking point for the Trump administration since it may view Zelensky as an impediment to peace.

The Ukrainian leader has an interest in keeping the war going since his term in office expired in May 2024 and has been able to remain in power due to the lack of elections.

⭕️ Over the past five days, around 10,000 members of Syria’s Alawite minority have fled seeking refuge and crossed into north Lebanon, according to Lebanese security sources cited by The National.

The local population in north Lebanon fears that the sectarian tension could spill over, particularly in the Bab al-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen districts of Tripoli, where deadly clashes between Sunni and Alawite fighters have occurred multiple times over the last 15 years.

“Around 10,000 Alawites have crossed from Syria to Lebanon in the last five days. They have settled in Tripoli and nearby areas, creating a sensitive situation across Lebanon.” one of the security sources said.

"There have been several confrontations, and the situation remains very fragile,” the source added.

At least 973 civilians—mostly Alawites—have been killed in Syria since Thursday, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). This is a preliminary toll, and the number is expected to be in the thousands.

3/10 - Damascus Announces 'End Of Security Operation' After Four-Day Killing Spree Targeting Alawite Civilians

Government forces have killed over 1,000 people and have displaced tens of thousands since last week

The Syrian Defense Ministry announced on 10 March the end of its brutal security operation against cells affiliated with Syria’s former military, during which at least 1,000 Alawite civilians were massacred by government forces.

“By the grace of God, we were able to absorb the attacks of the remnants of the defunct regime and its officers, and we destroyed their element of surprise and were able to keep them away from vital centers and secure most of the public roads that the remnants had used as a starting point to target our civilians and innocent people,” stated Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdul Ghani.

Abdul Ghani added that security and military forces “neutralized” the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) cells in Al-Mukhtariya, Al-Muzayria, Al-Zobar, and other areas in the Latakia and Tartous governorates.

“With this achievement, we announce the end of the military operation that was launched for the previously mentioned goals, and after public institutions became able to begin resuming their work and providing basic services to our people in preparation for the return of life to normal and working to establish security and stability,” the spokesman went on to say.

He also vowed to “give the investigation committee the full opportunity to uncover the circumstances of the events, verify the facts, and provide justice to the oppressed.”

According to a preliminary death toll, which has been updated several times and is expected to continue rising, 937 Alawite civilians were killed by government military and security forces during the operation in Syria’s coastal cities and their countryside.

While authorities have announced the end of the operation, government forces continued to attack coastal villages on Monday.

“Armed groups entered the town of Harisoun in the countryside of Banias with the Ministry of Defense forces, and the forces began looting and burning homes and citizens’ properties,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

Heavy clashes erupted on Thursday last week after security forces entered two villages near the coastal city of Jableh and were ambushed by SAA cells. The new government mobilized reinforcements to be deployed across the coastal regions of Latakia and Tartous, marking the start of the widescale operation.

During the operation, members of different extremist factions that have been integrated into the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) Ministry of Defense and armed forces went door to door, killing civilians, including women and children. Many of the massacres were documented on video by the militants themselves.

New Israeli Army Chief Approves 'Offensive' Plans To Restart Gaza Genocide

Israel has refused to move to the second stage of the ceasefire negotiations to permanently end the war

New Israeli army Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir has approved new offensive plans for the Southern Command to resume the war against Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza, Ynet reported on 10 March.

The Israeli military has informed Israel’s political leadership that any new offensive in Gaza will be subject to various operational constraints, primarily in areas where captives held by are believed to be held.

Last week, the New York Times (NYT) reported 41 Israeli captives held by Hamas were killed as a result of Israeli military operations and bombing since the start of the war. Israel’s military campaign has killed over 50,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) stated, “The plans approved by the Chief of Staff include intensifying air strikes, expanding the scope of ground movements, and re-evacuating the northern Gaza Strip of Palestinians, in addition to preparing to call up hundreds of thousands of reserve soldiers according to emergency orders.”

Ynet noted that over the past month, multiple Israeli army divisions, including reserve brigades, have already been preparing for a renewed ground assault and aerial bombing campaign.
