Arab Leaders Endorse Egypt's $53bn Plan For Gaza Reconstruction, Reject Forced Displacement Of Palestinians

The Egyptian plan calls for the Palestinian Authority to manage Gaza while rejecting President Trump's call to ethnically cleanse the strip

An Arab summit convened in Cairo on 4 March adopted an Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of Gaza in a bid to counter US President Donald Trump's proposal to forcibly expel Palestinians from the strip while turning it into a "Middle East Riviera" for Israel's Jewish settlers.

The final statement from the summit called for finding a realistic alternative to the displacement of the Palestinian people and, before that, the categorical rejection of the displacement of the Palestinian people from their land or within it.

It also condemned the "starvation and scorched earth policies" pursued by Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians and stressed the importance of implementing the second and third stages of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which call for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the strip.

The statement also condemned Israel's attacks on Syria and its incursions into Syrian territory while calling on the international community to compel Israel to stop these violations.

A detailed draft of the Egyptian plan obtained by Sputnik envisions setting aside $53 billion to reconstruct Gaza and forming a committee to manage it for 6 months in preparation for the return of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Despite internal failures, the probe finds Shin Bet correctly predicted Hamas' lack of deterrence. Chief Ronen Bar, though taking responsibility, is unlikely to resign until hostages return and a state inquiry begins

The Shin Bet security service completed on Tuesday its inquiry into the agency's failures that led to the massacre in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The organization admitted to a series of serious failures, the most important being its failure to provide suitable warnings about Hamas' preparations for the attack the night before.

Nevertheless, the inquiry also pointed an accusing finger at Israeli policy in the Gaza Strip, and to a large extent, this accusation was directed at the government, and especially at Benjamin Netanyahu..

Even though he accepted responsibility for his share in the failure, Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar doesn't intend to resign anytime soon and will apparently fight Netanyahu's efforts to dismiss him. Bar's close friend, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi, will leave his post on Wednesday, a year and 10 months before his term ends...

...though the report said the Shin Bet correctly assessed the magnitude of the threat posed by Hamas – unlike the government and other security services – it failed to translate this into a suitable warning about the scope and timing of the attack...

The inquiry found that the Hamas plan that the IDF dubbed Walls of Jericho came to Israel's notice twice, in different versions – once in early 2018 and again in 2022.
