2/20 — 6 COs Charged With Murder Of Inmate At Marcy Correctional

An Oneida County Court in Utica was packed with emotional family and community members on Thursday as 10 corrections officers at the Marcy State Correctional Facility answered to charges in the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks back in December.

Six of the officers were charged with murder, three face manslaughter charges and one faces a charge of tampering with evidence. Additionally, nine people are accused with watching the beating and not intervening, including a member of outside medical staff. In total, 17 people have been suspended pending firing and one has resigned.

Murder charges were levied against the following Central New York Corrections Officers:

David Kingsley- Murder 2nd, Manslaughter

Anthony Farina- Murder 2nd, Manslaughter

Nicholas Anzalone - Murder 2nd, Manslaughter, Offering a False Instrument

Christopher Walrath- Murder 2nd, Manslaughter

Unidentified person- Murder 2nd, Manslaughter, Offering a False Instrument

Matthew Galliher- Murder 2nd, Manslaughter , Gang Assault

These six defendants were also charged with Manslaughter, and Galliher was charged with Gang Assault. Each of the defendants pleaded not guilty.

Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree charges were made against Sgt. Michael Mashaw, CO Michael Fisher, and CO David Walters. Nicolas Gentile was charged with Tampering with Evidence. Each of these defendants also pleaded not guilty. Court proceedings have been adjourned until March 31st.

“This incident is a sobering reminder of the challenges facing our correctional system," said Governor Kathy Hochul.

An Israeli ministerial committee is set to approve a bill on Sunday that would legalize the annexation of settlements around occupied East Jerusalem in an effort to establish a "Greater Jerusalem," according to a report by Haaretz. The bill, introduced by Likud MK Dan Iluz, aims to incorporate settlements such as Ma’ale Adumim, Beitar Illit, Givat Ze’ev, Efrat, and Ma’ale Mikhmas into a new administrative framework. If approved by the committee, the bill will proceed to the Knesset for a preliminary reading and, if passed, will require three readings before becoming law. Support for the bill is strong among both the government and some opposition factions, suggesting broad political backing for further annexation moves.

Haaretz quoted the left-wing Israeli association Ir Amim, which warned that the bill could pave the way for additional annexation in the West Bank and serve as a major obstacle to any future political solution. Iluz defended the measure, asserting that it is a necessary step toward full sovereignty over “Judea and Samaria” (the West Bank), comparing it to previous laws passed despite international pressure.

Israel Blocks Aid To Gaza, Escalates Violence As First Phase Of Ceasefire Expires

Hamas has rejected US envoy Steve Witkoff’s proposal to extend phase one of the ceasefire, and is demanding a return to what was initially agreed upon

Israel has accepted a proposal brought by US envoy Steve Witkoff to extend the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement for another 42 days, facing rejection from the Hamas movement.

As a result of Hamas’s rejection – which stems from the resistance movement’s insistence on abiding by the terms of what was initially agreed upon – Israel announced on 2 March that it halted the entry of aid and supplies into the Gaza Strip.

“With the end of the first stage of the prisoner swap deal and following Hamas' rejection of Witkoff’s proposal to continue negotiations - which Israel agreed to - Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided to halt all imports of goods and supplies to the Gaza Strip as of today,” said the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement.

“Israel will not allow a ceasefire without the release of its prisoners. If Hamas continues to refuse, there will be further consequences,” the premier’s office added.

The extension deal agreed to by Netanyahu calls for the release of half of the estimated 22 living captives in Gaza, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Syrian Government Forces Deploy South Of Damascus To ‘End Chaos’ In Druze Villages — The Cradle

Clashes recently erupted between Syrian security forces and Druze militias in the city of Jaramana, resulting in casualties on both sides

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led Syrian security forces deployed to the city of Jaramana on the outskirts of Damascus late on 2 March to “end the state of chaos” in the area, according to state media.

“Our forces will work to end the state of chaos and illegal checkpoints set up by outlaw groups who have resorted to kidnapping, killing, and armed robbery,” Hussam Tahhan, the lieutenant colonel responsible for the Damascus countryside, told the Syrian state news agency SANA on 3 March. “This action follows the refusal of those involved in the assassination of the late Ahmad al-Khatib, a security member at the Ministry of Defense, to surrender themselves.”

“The armed individuals outside state authority rejected all mediations and agreements. No Syrian geographical area will remain outside the control of state institutions. We have witnessed significant cooperation from the residents of the city of Jaramana in this matter,” Tahhan added.

Jaramana, which is dominated by Syria's Druze religious minority, is home to some three million Syrians, including Christians and Sunni Muslims displaced from other parts of the country during the 14-year war that began in 2011.

Since HTS ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and took power in Damascus in December, they have not been allowed to deploy their forces to Jaramana. The city has instead been protected by local Druze militias who operate checkpoints at its entrances.

IMF, World Bank Reconstruction Funds For Lebanon Contingent On 'Normalization': Report

Western officials have stated that Lebanon's access to international funding will be tied to political pressure to normalize ties with Israel and to disarm the resistance

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank are seeking to tie reconstruction funds for Lebanon to “normalization” with Israel and Hezbollah's “disarmament,” according to informed sources who spoke with Al-Akhbar.

During a recent meeting between acting Banque du Liban (BDL) governor Wassim Mansouri and IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, the western official reportedly indicated that “Lebanon’s access to funding from the IMF and donor countries will … be linked to specific steps and procedures with a specific time frame and objective.”

“According to those familiar with the matter, these steps coincide with expected political pressures under the title of ‘normalization’ and ‘disarmament,’” the Lebanese daily reported on 26 February.

A day prior, Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to West Asia, proclaimed he “sees potential” for Lebanon and Syria to join a normalization deal with Israel.

“Lebanon, by the way, could actually mobilize and come into the Abraham Peace Accords, as could potentially Syria. So, so many profound changes are happening,” Witkoff said Wednesday during an event in Washington for the American Jewish Committee.

In 2022, the IMF and Lebanon reached a staff-level agreement for a four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) valued at approximately $3 billion, contingent upon sweeping reforms of the financial sector. However, this deal has not progressed due to Lebanon's ongoing crises and deep-rooted corruption.

Earlier this month, Lebanese Finance Minister Yassin Jaber announced that the World Bank had prepared a “preliminary plan” for a $1 billion reconstruction project to rebuild infrastructure and remove debris from the Israeli war on Lebanon. The project includes an initial funding commitment of $250 million for Beirut.

According to Al-Akhbar's sources, World Bank representatives have requested that the required procedures be expedited to approve the fund at the World Bank’s Executive Board meeting on 25 March, contingent on western demands for financial and political reform.

The EU has also conditioned funding for Lebanon on the “need to restructure its banking system,” holding up the disbursement of 500 million euros in aid that is part of a 2024 deal signed between Beirut and Brussels to reduce the flow of refugees into Europe.

Half of the money was paid out last August. Still, the remainder will be subject to “some conditions,” EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica said during a visit to Lebanon.

“The main precondition is the restructure of the banking sector... and a good agreement with the International Monetary Fund,” she said after meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Following Israel's brutal war on Lebanon, estimates say the country today needs an estimated $6-7 billion for full-scale reconstruction.

US Releases $870 Million In Military Aid For Taiwan, Angering China

The US has sold weapons to Taiwan for decades and started providing US-funded aid in 2023

The US has quietly released $870 million in funding for military aid to Taiwan after it was briefly paused during the Trump administration’s freeze on foreign aid.

Reuters first reported on February 21 that the US released the military aid for Taiwan as part of $5.3 billion in exemptions from the foreign aid pause. China, which strongly opposes US military support for Taiwan, reacted to the news on February 26.

“We are deeply concerned over relevant reports,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian. “China has all along opposed US military assistance to China’s Taiwan region, which has severely violated the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, undermined China’s sovereignty and security interests, and sent a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

Lin added that China urges the US to “stop arming Taiwan and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

The US has always sold weapons to Taiwan since Washington severed diplomatic relations with Taipei as part of a normalization agreement with Beijing in 1979, but it wasn’t until 2023 that the US began providing US-funded military aid, a step that marked a significant escalation. In 2024, President Biden signed off on more than $1 billion in military aid for Taiwan.

The US military support is done in the name of deterrence, but it has only escalated tensions in the region. During a press conference on February 27, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian issued a strong warning against US involvement in Taiwan, which has been encouraged by the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

“The Taiwan question is an internal affair of China, which brooks no external interference. The US side wants to contain China with Taiwan and connives at risky and provocative activities of the DPP authorities for ‘Taiwan independence.’ This strategy will ultimately backfire,” Wu said.

“The DPP authorities have an illusion of ‘soliciting US support for independence’ and ‘resisting unification by force.’ It is a serious miscalculation of the situation, the public opinion, and the comparison of strength. Overreaching itself in such a way is extremely dangerous,” Wu added. ” We warn the DPP authorities that holding back the tide with a broom will only end up in self-destruction. We will come and get you, sooner or later.”

President Trump recently declined to say whether or not the US would defend Taiwan if China attacked the island, reverting the US back to a policy of “strategic ambiguity” on the issue, which was abandoned by President Biden. While Trump has a less bellicose tone toward China, the resumption of US military aid to Taiwan signals that the Trump administration will continue policies toward Taipei that Beijing views as very provocative.

Ben-Gvir Accuses Freed Hostage Eli Sharabi Of 'Echoing Hamas Propaganda' In Testimony

This statement came as released hostage Eli Sharabi stated that this decision led to Hamas retaliating by worsening the conditions hostages were held in.

Eli Sharabi was “echoing Hamas propaganda” when he spoke about his experiences in captivity during an interview with Channel 12’s Uvda last Thursday, former national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said Saturday night.

Sharabi had said Ben-Gvir’s decision to enforce stricter conditions for terrorists in Israeli prisons was what led to Hamas worsening the treatment of hostages in captivity.

“I am proud of my actions,” Ben-Gvir told Channel 13, adding that he would not apologize for the decision.

Last Monday, Ben-Gvir wrote on X/Twitter: “Channel 13 decided to legitimize the atrocities committed by Hamas against the hostages, with an announcement that, because of the change in the conditions of the terrorists in the prison led by me, Hamas abused our hostages.”

“They apparently forgot that the terrorists murdered, raped, and massacred Jews long before I implemented changes in the conditions of terrorists in prison,” he added. “They don’t need any excuse to do this, other than our very existence.”.. Ben-Gvir wrote.

Ben Gvir Calls for Execution of Palestinian Prisoners With ‘Shot in the Head’

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir calls for Palestinian prisoners to be shot in the head, saying he plans to pass legislation in the Knesset that would allow for the execution of Palestinian prisoners, who "must be killed."

He urged the passing of the bill... saying they should be given just enough food to keep them alive until the law is enacted.

The Israeli Knesset's General Assembly approved the preliminary reading of the bill in early March 2023.

In April, Ben Gvir advocated the killing of Palestinian prisoners to alleviate "overcrowding" in Israeli prisons.

Lebanese Druze Leader Warns Of 'Israeli Plot' To 'Sabotage, Divide Syria' On Sectarian Lines

The warning comes amid rising sectarian tensions and clashes between HTS-led Syrian security forces and Druze self-defense units in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana

A prominent Druze leader in Lebanon warned on Sunday of an Israeli plot to divide Syria along sectarian lines and create chaos amid clashes between Syrian government security forces and local Druze self-defense units in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana.

"The free Syrians must be cautious of the plots of Israel," veteran Druze leader Walid Jumblatt said at a news conference Sunday.

"In Syria, there is a plot for sabotage. There is a plot for sabotage in the region and for the Arabs' national security," Jumblatt added.

Jumblatt said he plans to visit Syria, following weekend clashes between militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led Syrian government and Druze self-defense units in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana.

Jaramana, which is dominated by Syria's Druze religious minority, is home to some three million Syrians, including Christians and Sunni Muslims displaced from other parts of the country during the 14-year war that began in 2011.

Syrian Druze residents of the town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights expel Israeli Finance Minister and other members of the Likud (Netanyahu’s party) from the funeral of the 12 youths who were killed after a missile fell on a soccer field.

The Israeli media and army have described the victims as Israeli civilians, but the residents of Majdal Shams are Syrian Druze living under occupation since the Israeli army occupied the Golan Heights in 1967.

Residents of the town have refused Israeli citizenship and continue to view themselves as Syrians.
