House Foreign Affairs Chair Tells Staff To Refer To Israeli-Occupied West Bank As ‘Judea And Samaria’

The order from Rep. Mast, who previously wore an IDF uniform on Capitol Hill, is a sign of support for Israeli annexation of the West Bank

Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who previously volunteered with the Israeli military, has ordered committee staff to refer to the Israeli-occupied West Bank as “Judea and Samaria,” a biblical name the state of Israel uses to refer to the Palestinian territory.

According to Axios , in a memo to 50 Republican staffers, Mast wrote that “in recognition of our unbreakable bond with Israel and the inherent right of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will, from here forward, refer to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria in formal correspondence, communication and documentation.”

Mast is one of Israel’s staunchest supporters in Congress, which he demonstrated when he wore an IDF uniform to Capitol Hill in October 2023. “As the only member to serve with both the United States Army and the Israel Defense Forces, I will always stand with Israel,” he wrote on X at the time.

Mast’s order to Republican staffers comes amid a major Israeli military operation in the West Bank dubbed “Iron Wall,” which has involved the forced displacement of 40,000 Palestinians , the destruction of roads, homes, and other infrastructure, and the killing of civilians, including a pregnant woman and several children.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said the displaced Palestinians cannot return home, signaling a new ethnic cleansing campaign has begun. The Israeli government has made expanding illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank a priority with the ultimate goal of annexing the territory.

Friedrich Merz's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won German elections this weekend, paving the way for him to become the country's next chancellor

Germany's likely next chancellor said on 24 February he would ensure that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can visit Germany despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“In the event that he [Netanyahu] plans to visit Germany, I have promised myself that we will find a way to ensure that he can visit Germany and leave again without being arrested,” said conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party chief Friedrich Merz.

Israel Stomps On Gaza Ceasefire Deal, Refuses Withdrawal From Philadelphi Corridor

Several recent reports say Israel has made extensive plans to resume its genocidal war on Gaza

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on 27 February that Tel Aviv will not withdraw its army from the Philadelphi corridor on the southern Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt, marking a stark violation of the ceasefire agreement signed last month.

“We also have information that Hamas is planning to attack soldiers and towns during the ceasefire,” Katz claimed during a meeting.

“The Philadelphia axis will remain a buffer zone, just as is the case in Lebanon and Syria,” the defense minister added, openly confirming that Israeli forces will not withdraw from the area. “I have seen with my own eyes a fair number of tunnels that penetrate Philadelphia, some of which were closed and others open,” Katz went on to say.

During the meeting with settlement council leaders, Katz said phase one of the ceasefire agreement is “complete.” He also said that Israel only agreed to a deal to return its captives, and that it is ready to return to war.

The Israeli Army Radio also reported on the same day that Tel Aviv “has backed down from its commitment to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor at the end of the first phase of the exchange deal.”

Israeli DM: US Gave Israel Green Light To Stay In Lebanon ‘Indefinitely’

Occupation of southern Lebanon not ‘time-dependent’

Israel’s decision to continue to occupy territory in southern Lebanon beyond the February 18 deadline came without a lot of official comment from the US. According to Israeli DM Israel Katz, however, the US gave them a “green light” to remain militarily in Lebanon indefinitely.

Israeli media was reporting around the deadline that the US was backing the continued occupation of five surveillance posts inside southern Lebanon. The US never directly confirmed that, however, and that Israel remains in Lebanon just came and went without official US comment.

The ceasefire ending the Israeli invasion of Lebanon was meant to provide a 60-day window for Israeli withdrawal, which would’ve ended January 26. The US guaranteed that Israel would be out by then, but then later endorsed extending the deadline to February 18. They similarly talked about February 18 being a firm deadline that would not be extended , but then stopped talking about it at all beyond that.

Israel started building the hilltop surveillance posts before the February 18 deadline, and Israeli FM Gideon Sa’ar said that the “ strategic high points ” would be necessary to retain temporarily, until the Lebanese Army has sufficient control of the south.

The temporary nature of those posts seems to be at considerable doubt from Katz’s comments. He no longer presented this as anything to do with Lebanese Army control of the area, and just maintains that it is “ not time-dependent. ” It appears Israel will be staying as long as it wants, and the US is comfortable with that idea.

The BBC’s board has issued an apology for the “significant and damaging” errors made in the production of its Gaza documentary.

The documentary was removed from BBC iPlayer on Friday, 21 February, after it was disclosed that its narrator, Abdullah al-Yazouri, was the son of Gaza Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Ayman al-Yazouri, who has a PHD from Huddersfield University.

According to a BBC spokesperson, the production company, Hoyo Films, informed the BBC that it had compensated the boy’s mother with a small payment for his narration, transferring the money through his sister’s bank account.

In a statement, Hoyo Films explained its intention to showcase voices that had not been represented on screen throughout the war, treating them with dignity and respect while highlighting the devastating effects of war on their daily lives.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented that meetings had been arranged between the government and the BBC, expressing his concern about the program in question.

Reuters Exclusive: Israel Lobbies US to Keep Russian Bases in a 'Weak' Syria, Sources Say

Israel is lobbying the United States to keep Syria weak and decentralised, including by letting Russia keep its military bases there to counter Turkey's growing influence in the country, four sources familiar with the efforts said.

Turkey's often fraught ties with Israel have come under severe strain during the Gaza war and Israeli officials have told Washington that Syria's new Islamist rulers, who are backed by Ankara, pose a threat to Israel's borders, the sources said.

The lobbying points to a concerted Israeli campaign to influence U.S. policy at a critical juncture for Syria, as the Islamists who ousted Bashar al-Assad try to stabilise the fractured state and get Washington to lift punishing sanctions.

Israel communicated its views to top U.S. officials during meetings in Washington in February and subsequent meetings in Israel with U.S. Congressional representatives, three U.S. sources and another person familiar with the contacts said.

The main points were also circulated to some senior U.S. officials in an Israeli "white paper", two of the sources said.
All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to diplomatic sensitivities.

"Israel's big fear is that Turkey comes in and protects this new Syrian Islamist order, which then ends up being a base for Hamas and other militants," said Aron Lund, a fellow at U.S.-based think-tank Century International.

Jim Jordan Subpoenas Tech Giants For Documents On Foreign Censorship Of American Speech

The US House Judiciary Committee, led by Jim Jordan, subpoenas Big Tech over alleged foreign government censorship, citing laws in the EU, Canada, and more.

The US House Judiciary Committee’s tenacious, multi-year effort to expose the inner mechanisms of online censorship, and attempt to remedy any anti-constitutional transgressions of this nature, continues.

And while the focus in the previous years, during the Biden administration, had for the most part been on the US government-Big Tech collusion, this is now being expanded to look into how foreign governments may also have interfered – or are continuing to do that – with Americans’ free speech.

To this end, Committee Chairman Jim Jordan just this week issued a number of subpoenas – to Google (Alphabet), Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Rumble, TikTok, and X – asking each company to submit documents relevant to the questions regarding their possible compliance with foreign efforts to curtail speech, that might have affected US users as well.

According to the announcement made by Jordan, this could cover the companies working to meet censorship laws abroad, stemming from various regulations, judicial orders, “or other government-initiated efforts.”

Jordan’s letters to each of the said companies fairly comprehensively touched on the various instances of censorship-driven legislation abroad over the last few years.

And it’s not just Brazil, even though it is now once again in the spotlight after last year’s high-profile “showdown” with X – these crises are always driven by Alexandre de Moraes.

“Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has issued secret, lawless orders forcing American companies to remove large amounts of content or face fines and be banned from the country,” one of the letters reads.

But the subpoenas are not leaving out the UK, Australia, or the EU..., and Canada, on notice, too.
