Israel Rebukes French Proposal To Hasten Withdrawal From Lebanon: Report

The deadline by which Israel must withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon is only four days away

Israel has rejected a proposal put forward by France that would see UNIFIL forces and the French military replace Israeli occupation forces in certain areas of south Lebanon, which is aimed at speeding up the withdrawal of the Israeli army by the deadline set to expire in a few days.

According to a 14 February report by the Jerusalem Post, “Israel is instead choosing to remain in these five crucial locations.”

Israel’s Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) reported earlier this week that the US has backed a “long-term” Israeli army presence in south Lebanon. According to sources cited by Reuters, Israel has requested a 10-day extension of the 18 February deadline – which would see its forces withdraw by 28 February.

A Saudi media report this week also said that Israel has agreed with the US and Lebanon to extend its stay for at least another month. This was denied by Lebanese officials, including President Joseph Aoun.

Aoun affirmed Lebanon's rejection of any further extension and denied what was conveyed by the Saudi Al-Hadath channel.

Trump: Military Spending Could Be Cut In Half And There’s No Reason To Build New Nuclear Weapons

The president said he wants to have a global conference with Russia and China to discuss cutting military spending

President Trump told reporters on Thursday that he believes US military spending could eventually be cut in half and that he wants to pursue the idea as part of an agreement with Russia and China. He also said there was no reason to build new nuclear weapons.

“At some point, when things settle down, I’m going to meet with China and I’m going to meet with Russia, in particular those two, and I’m going to say there’s no reason for us to be spending almost $1 trillion on the military … and I’m going to say we can spend this on other things,” Trump said.

“When we straighten it all out, then one of the first meetings I want to have is with President Xi of China and President Putin of Russia, and I want to say let’s cut our military budget in half. And we can do that, and I think we’ll be able to do that,” he added.

The US spends significantly more on its military than Russia and China combined. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) , in 2023, the US accounted for 37% of global military spending. China came in second but was still far behind, accounting for 12% of military spending, and Russia was in third at 4.5%.

Discussing nuclear weapons, Trump said , “There’s no reason for us to be building brand new nuclear weapons. We already have so many you could destroy the world 50 times over or 100 times over. And here we are building new nuclear weapons, and [Russia] is building new nuclear weapons, and China is building new nuclear weapons.”

US Treasury Imposes Sanctions On Chief ICC Prosecutor

Dozens of nations have warned that Washington's actions against the ICC 'threaten to erode the international rule of law'

The US Treasury Department announced on 13 February that it is imposing economic sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan, freezing all his assets in the US and barring him from entering the country.

Khan was officially added to the Treasury's Specially Designated Nationals and blocked persons list over his decision to issue “baseless arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of defense Yoav Gallant.”

“The ICC has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel, as neither country is party to the Rome Statute or a member of the ICC,” a statement from US officials reads.

Thursday's announcement follows an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump last week imposing sanctions against the ICC.

Since taking office, Trump has accused the ICC of “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally, Israel,” claiming that the court's actions set a “dangerous precedent” that can expose US citizens to “harassment, abuse, and possible arrest.”

Lancet: Life Expectancy In Gaza Halved In First Year Of Israeli Onslaught

The average age of Palestinian deaths dropped from 75.5 to 35 years.

A new study found that the average life expectancy in Gaza was nearly cut in half during the first year of Israeli military operations in Gaza. Tens of thousands of children have been killed in the bombing.

The paper, published by the prominent British medical journal, the Lancet, found, “life expectancy in the Gaza Strip decreased by 34·9 years during the first 12 months of the war, about half (–46·3%) the prewar level of 75·5 years.” It continues, “Life expectancy losses were larger for males (–38·0 years [–51·6%]) than for females, but nonetheless, females also suffered large losses (–29·9 years [–38·6%]).”

The authors say they only used data from those who were directly killed in the conflict and not indirect deaths. Often, indirect deaths exceed those directly killed in the war, and the authors predict the decrease in life expectancy is higher than what was shown in the analysis of the direct deaths data.

“Our approach to estimating life expectancy losses in this study is conservative as it ignores the indirect effect of the war on mortality.” It continues, “Even ignoring this indirect effect, results show that the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip generated a life expectancy loss of more than 30 years during the first 12 months of the war, nearly halving prewar levels. Actual losses are likely to be higher.”

That the life expectancy in Gaza has dropped significantly over the past year is unsurprising as the horrific tactics deployed by Israel have often targeted children. During the war, Israel used a program called “Where’s Daddy.” Under the program, Tel Aviv waited until suspected Hamas fighters were at their homes to bomb them, often killing entire families.

The Kremlin has confirmed that a Trump-Putin summit in a third country is happening soon

Ukrainian President Voldomyr Zelensky said Thursday that it was “not very pleasant” that President Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin a day earlier before calling him.

“We’ve already had three conversations with President Trump, so I don’t take this call as a priority (for Trump), that he spoke to Russia first. Although it’s really not very pleasant in any case,” Zelensky told reporters while visiting the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant in western Ukraine.

“As for the conversation, he knows my thoughts. I really believe that Ukraine is the priority first and foremost, there is a war against us,” he added.

The call between Trump and Putin marked the first time in three years that the leaders of the US and Russia held a publicly known phone call. After the conversation, Trump said negotiations to end the war would start “immediately,” and then he called Zelensky.

The Kremlin said on Thursday that Trump and Putin both offered the other to visit their respective countries but that a summit in a third country would happen first.

Syrian 'National Dialogue' To Exclude Kurds, Former Government Figures

A conference will be held to provide non-binding recommendations to the president for a future Syrian constitution

Syria’s upcoming national dialogue conference will include all segments of Syrian society except for representatives of the Kurdish-led autonomous administration in the northeast and figures connected to the former government of president Bashar al-Assad, organizers announced on 13 February.

“This will be the first real gathering of Syrians in 75 years,” claimed Huda al-Atassi, a member of the conference’s organizing committee, during a press briefing in Damascus.

The conference will cover “social, political, economic and governance issues, laying the foundations for a solid future based on national consensus, justice, reform and inclusion,” she said.

However, proposals discussed at the conference will not be binding. They will only be provided as recommendations to the Syrian presidency.

Militants from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by former Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who went by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani, toppled the Assad government in December. Sharaa, who declared himself president earlier this month, says that it will take years to adopt a new constitution and hold elections.

Hegseth Says No NATO Membership For Ukraine, Return To Pre-2014 Borders ‘Unrealistic’

The secretary says Ukraine needs 'robust security guarantees' that won't involve a NATO troop deployment

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday dismissed the idea of NATO membership for Ukraine as part of a peace deal with Russia and said the goal to restore Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders was “unrealistic.”

Hegseth made the comments while addressing a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels. “The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome for a negotiated settlement,” he said.

Hegseth said the Trump administration’s goal is to end the war through diplomacy, which he said must start “by recognizing that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective. Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering.”

Restoring Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders has been a war goal of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, although there have been signs in recent months that he’s accepted that’s unrealistic. But he is still calling for strong security guarantees from the US that involve the deployment of troops, which Hegseth also dismissed.

“Any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops. If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission, and they should not be covered under Article 5,” he said.

Musa Nawawra, a 71 year-old from Bethlehem, has been imprisoned by Israel since 2007, serving two life sentences plus 21 years. He is the father of 13 children, five of whom have been imprisoned by Israel.

During the great 1987 Intifada, he was arrested and placed in administrative detention. With the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, he became a leader in Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and was pursued by Israel from 2000 to 2007.

In 2007, he was besieged for four hours by Israeli occupation forces that deployed over 50 military vehicles. Following his capture, he endured two months of intense and torturous interrogation.
