it does depend on the sport sometimes. chess remains an example to me of gender segregation done for good reasons and done correctly
(women are still allowed in men's tournaments; women's tournaments were created to protect women from rampant social attitudes that are especially present in chess even to this day)
they basically just exist to encourage women to get into the game at a tournament level by providing a space to do that without being subject to the misogynistic black hole that the entire chess world orbits around
the only real problem with it is the recent rulings on trans players which are uhh :/
