Saudi Arabia is seeking to recruit Syrian mercenaries to send to Yemen.
The Turkish news site Türkiye Today reported that Saudi Arabia had sought in recent months to recruit fighters from Syria to meet its military needs in Yemen, but the Syrian government “politely” refused a request to organize a Syrian force and send it to confront the Sana’a forces.
One source said: “This matter has been exhausted and is over. The Saudi request was made several months ago. Syria politely declined, explaining that it is focused on organizing its own military forces and does not intend to enter into a conflict as a third party.”
The source added that the Syrian government does not prevent individuals from leaving the country to participate in the conflict, but stressed that Damascus will not bear responsibility for such individual participation.
Turkish sources also rejected claims that Turkey played a role in transporting or organizing Syrians for deployment to Yemen. The Turkish sources stated, "We have no connection to this matter. Syria and Saudi Arabia are sovereign states."
She added that Türkiye will determine the steps it will take under the “Mecca Agreement” after the agreement establishes a legal basis within the participating countries.
The Turkish website indicated that Saudi Arabia continues to explore options for recruiting military personnel and trainers from different countries, as part of its efforts to meet its military needs in Yemen, according to sources familiar with the matter.
