In a statement from the Swedish-based parent company, Yara International said its Pilbara ammonia plant was currently not producing due to technical issues.

“The most recent assessment is that the ammonia plant might be closed for around 4-6 weeks while TAN production is expected to be able to run more or less as normal,” the statement said.

The Yara Pilbara Fertilisers plant is one of the largest ammonia production sites in the world. Our operations produce an average 840,000MT of ammonia annually, representing about 5% of the global traded market.

Global food production is highly dependent on ammonia fertilizer, with an estimated Our World in Data half of the world's population relying on food grown with synthetic nitrogen fertilizers Our World in Data, derived primarily from ammonia thyssenkrupp.

The Strait of Hormuz led to a 33% contraction in the global fertilizer supply chain, while the region's annual urea exports of 22 million tons halted. Some 46% of global urea supply is sourced directly from the Gulf region.
