If that’s the case, then the US and Israel are in far greater trouble than us critics could have anticipated.
The overarching premise of the Iran hawks was that all it would take is a few deadly blows to bring the Islamic Republic of Iran crashing down like a house of cards.
Decapitate the leadership and the rest would quickly follow, so the argument went. Military resistance would falter and a massive domestic uprising would sweep away the remaining state institutions.
What do we see right now? After the initial US-Israeli attack, Iran almost immediately went on the counteroffensive — pummelling US bases in Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Kuwait. Now the Iranians are starting to turn their fire on the Israelis.
Instead of domestic chaos, Iranians all across the country are rallying in defiance against the foreign aggressors.
We don’t know Khamenei’s fate right now, but it’s clear that the Americans and Israelis dramatically underestimated the resilience of the system he helped build.
