Undeniable evidence of child grooming. Disgusting.

I went to the Cost of Living demo in Dublin on Saturday. I wanted to keep an eye on them. There were a few more of us doing the same.

There were three or four hundred demonstrators at most. A Sergeant I was talking to thought the same. It started at the Garden of Remembrance where Diarmuid and the Cork crowd begin their demos and it was smaller than the smallest demo they've had.

But you could learn a real lesson about how to organise a demo.
Lots of well funded groups there: pensioners group (ESB retirees), Senior Citizens Parliament???, Unions (at least 6; Siptu, Ictu, Unite, Mandate, Forsa, Students), parties(at least 4). When you've got all these groups on the public teat you just call a demo and you assemble it out of these parts. Unfortunately for them only the paid people showed up. No grass roots to speak of. Real low energy.

And Aontu were there with flags and banners. I spoke with them - asked them why they were there - I still couldn't tell you.

There were TV crews, radio crews and at least 10 press photographers. Practically an in house media team for the 3-400 demonstrators. Your one off RTE that looks like the lion from the Wizard of Oz was there. Even with all that coverage good luck trying to find a wide angle shot of the crowd anywhere.

So I went home thinking that must have been a disappointment.

How wrong I was. The papers and media all had reports of thousands demanding action in nationwide protests. I felt I was being personally gaslit.

But still, just nonsense, right? Just play acting for themselves?

No. It turns out that today the the Taoiseach is due to sit down with stakeholders in talks about the upcoming budget. The huge popular outburst of anger we're supposed to have seen at the weekend strengthens the hand of the unions and other groups involved. Old hands - they know what they're doing.

I suppose this is nothing new. Irish politics really only consists of demands by the kind of groups who put on this pantomime and the government responding to them. It was just unusual that you could see it happening in public instead of in committee rooms and meetings in the Department.

What do you do when you see reality being created in front of your eyes like this. What answer do we have. What response is there? Beats me. I still can't get over the performance I saw playing out this weekend.
