What is Truth? Behold the Man!
~ Pontius Pilate
Eusebiusโs report to Tiberius:
โAnd when the wonderful resurrection and ascension of our Savior were already reported abroad, in accordance with an ancient custom which prevailed among the rulers of the provinces, of reporting to the emperor the novel occurrences which took place in them, in order that nothing might escape him, Pontius Pilate informed Tiberius of the reports which were reported abroad through all Palestine concerning the resurrection of our Savior Jesus from the dead. He gave an account also of other wonders which he had learned of him, and how, after his death, having risen from the dead, he was now believed by many to be a God.โ

Wheat paste, glue, paper strips, paintโฆitโs clumsy but thatโs folk art for you. Created out of oneโs poverty. In between infant cries and short sleeps, with stolen minutes, whatever household items are at hand, and a felt need to make the object for devotional use. We will now have a half decent corpus for our family โtombโ tomorrow.

Continuing the trend of popes endorsing a healthy engagement with sports, Pope Leo is open about his fandom of his hometown, Southside Chicago baseball club, the White Sox. He has recently penned a letter on the Value of Sport in human and spiritual formation, which seemingly flew under the radar, but in my opinion, is one of the most comprehensive magisterial texts on the integration of sport and the Catholic faith.

"Through the voice of the popes, the Catholic Church proposed a vision of sport centered on the dignity of the human person, on his or her integral development, on education and on relationships with others, highlighting its universal value as a means of promoting values such as fraternity, solidarity and peace. The question posed by Venerable Pius XII in a speech addressed to Italian athletes in 1945 is emblematic: 'How could the Church not be interested [in sport]?'"

Why You Stopped Reading (and what to do about it) | with Jared Henderson
What has gone wrong with reading? This is one of the main questions on everybody's lips today, and very few people have written about it as thoroughly as Jared Henderson (@_jared). So I had a chat with him about the modern reading crisis, and what we canโฆ
From Fr. Robert Sirico, the Pastor Emeritus at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Grand Rapids, Michigan, President Emeritus of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, and the meritorious parish priest who gave me his personal copy of the โBig Yellow Bookโ that has forever help to define the core values, vision, and mission of Paleocrat Diariesโฆ Enthusiasm, by Msgr. Ronald Knox.
As if all the above was not more than enough, here is the providential cherry to top it all: Fr. Sirico is the one who celebrated Mass on that auspicious Christmas Eve of 2017, when, after six sad years of apostasy, my family returned to churchโฆ followed by a neatly vested altar boy sent to beckon me to speak with Fr. in the sacristyโฆ where he uttered those most inviolable wordsโwords that Iโll cherish until the day I dieโexulting, โWelcome home, Prodigal Son.โ
FTR โ People who have followed my work for a while would know that he & I didnโt always see eye-to-eye, but any & all of our disagreements aside, Fr. Sirico will forever be โour familyโs priest,โ and for more reasons than I could recall, not least of which is the historical fact the he & he alone was the only cleric to have visited (and prayed over) my daughter Samantha after she was diagnosed with brain cancer. He arrived unannounced (accompanied by Ambroseโs godmother, Marijo) a day or two before a Samiโs 17-brain surgery. She hadnโt seen either of them in four or five years, but she recognized Fr. Sirico right away, greeting him exuberantly, saying, โHey, I know you! Youโre Fr. Sirico. You used to call me Fire Toes because my white church shoes had red lights on them that blinked whenever I ran around.โ
FUN FACT: Fr. Sirico also happens to be the younger brother of the late-great Tony Sirico, popularly known as Pauly โWalnutsโ Gaultieri on HBOโs Sapranos. Fr. Sirico celebrated Solemn Requiem Mass for his brother at the Basilica of Regina Pacis in Brooklyn, New York.
