This is 80-year-old Thomas Moran, who took the train down from Westport for the rally in Dublin yesterday. Moran says that Land League founder Michael Davitt has been the inspiration for the Mayo Says No campaigns.

Philip Dwyer investigates the rumours that asylum seekers staying in cottages at the Roberstown Holiday Village assaulted the barman and two customers in Glennons pub in Allenwood, Co. Kildare, after they were asked to leave for acting inappropriately towards some women.

A fingerprint for a prisoner at Cork Prison whose identity is unknown to the authorities was crosschecked through Interpol and it proved to be a match for 27 different names across England and France.
Defence solicitor Eddie Burke said the accused gave his name as Yousoof Angelina and came from Syria but no longer has any travel documents. He said he arrived in Cork by ferry at Ringaskiddy.
He faces several burglary charges at Cork District Court and one charge for cannabis possession.

Laois gardaí are investigating an attempted abduction of a woman on the 26th of April on a local road in the Eyne area, between Mountmellick and Portlaoise.
The woman was out for a run on a bright evening after work when a driver passed, stopped his car and waited for her around a bend.
When she turned the corner, the man crossed the road with his arms outstretched and made an attempt to grab her. When the woman shouted at him to get back into his car, he kept his arms up and made another movement to grab her.
Fortunately, the shocked woman managed to run to a house nearby and was helped by residents.
The saloon car had an Irish registration and the man appeared to be either Irish or Eastern European, possibly aged in his 40s. The Laois Nationalist has agreed not to publish more specific details while the Garda investigation is underway.
The woman told the Laois Nationalist: “I want people to be alert for this person and for him to be stopped, before something incomprehensible happens another girl or woman. I have expressed the same concerns to the guards.”
“I don’t know if I will ever feel comfortable running on my own again. What worries me too is that this could happen to anyone out for a walk in broad daylight and others mightn’t be able to sprint like I can.”

A record-breaking 610 international protection applicants arrived in Ireland for the week ending 5 May 2024. If this rate keeps up, we could be looking at a figure of 30,000 by the end of the year.
36% of arrivals (222) are of Nigerian origin. Nigerians have been the largest group of rejected asylum seekers in Ireland for over 25 years which successive Irish governments have done nothing about except call Irish people racist for objecting.
58 people arrived from Jordan, presumably via Britain through the use of their Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme. Looks like that's becoming a trend and we will continue to see those numbers increase.

Sinn Féin's candidate for Ireland South in the EU elections previously called for the Government to “significantly increase” the numbers of asylum-seekers and refugees coming to the State. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil were only too happy to oblige.
