Care home used by Tusla ‘fabricated’ pre-employment checks of staff, posing major risk to young people in its care.
One of the largest private providers of emergency accommodation over the last two years has been Ideal Care Services. It is owned by Jossy Akwuobi, (45), from Tyrrelstown, Dublin, who is a pastor with the Wisdom Christian Centre, an evangelical group based in west Dublin.
Tusla paid Ideal Care €4.5 million in 2022, making it the third highest paid provider of special emergency arrangements that year
An internal Tusla report found Garda vetting files clearing staff to work for the company had been altered, while pre-employment checks of workers had been “fabricated”.
Tusla inspectors said there was “clear evidence” that Garda vetting declarations “had been altered post-issue”.
Speaking generally an inside source said they had seen children housed in seriously substandard accommodation, run by inexperienced staff. “I was worried. It was getting worse and worse…That’s what concerned me.”

Political interference on Tiktok:
Tiktok has removed this video campaigning for a No result in the upcoming referendum on changing the definition of family in the constitution on the grounds that it violates their "hate" policies.
The video shows a clip of Neale Richmond TD suggesting that the government understands that a Yes result will expand the scope of the family reunification scheme for migrants.
Minister David Stanton told the Dáil in 2015 that prior to the government limiting the scope of the scheme that year, the average number of family members each refugee brought to Ireland was 20 and the highest was 70, as refugees had been allowed to bring in grandparents, children over 18, siblings, nephews & nieces.
NGOs have been campaigning since 2015 to re-expand the scope of the scheme. Campaigners for a No result have argued that changing the definition of family in the constitution to "durable relationship" will give them an means to accomplish this.
The video is still available on X and Telegram.

The X account @dubslife1 says they received a notice advising them that X received a take-down request from "Irish Law Enforcement" for some video the account uploaded of a garda pepper spraying and then batoning a man in a shop in Palmerstown.
X says they have refused to comply with the request which claimed the video had violated Irish law. The video can still be viewed on X in Ireland and has racked up 608K views.
In the wake of the turmoil in Dublin last November after an Algerian refugee was alleged to have attacked a number of children and their minder with a knife, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris OBE said he would be providing gardaí with higher strength pepper spray. It is unknown if this variety was used on the man in the shop.
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties, who have previously highlighted issues around excessive force in the use of pepper spray, has so far issued no public comment about the video.

Ten companies paid €58m to run unregulated accommodation for children in care last year.
More than 180 vulnerable children are living in these emergency arrangements, which are often in bed and breakfasts or rental properties run by care staff from private companies.
Tusla has been under pressure due to its increasing reliance on the arrangements, which can cost up to €1 million per young person per year.
Figures show Baig and Mirza Health Services Ltd, which trades as Kare Plus Dublin South, was the highest-paid provider of special emergency arrangements last year, receiving €12.9 million from Tusla.
Accounts show the company made €3 million in profits, with remuneration for its two directors increasing from €195,000 to €866,000.
The company’s owners and directors are Muhammad Usman Baig (39), from Malahide, Dublin, and Farhan Mirza (40), from Dún Laoghaire, who is also its chief executive.

It's possible we might be developing the same bearded minor problem which Sweden became notorious for.
It's been reported that there has been a 500% increase in the number of unaccompanied minors referred to Tusla from the International Protection Office over the past four year and the cost of accommodating children has risen 14-fold to €71m.
A joint committee heard some details about the numbers:
No detail on the purported age-range or sex of the non-Ukrainians but there's a good chance it's similar.
In 2015, Sweden received 163,000 asylum-seekers, of whom 35,000 registered as unaccompanied minors but according to a report by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare in 2017, around 70% of unaccompanied minors who underwent medical age assessments were deemed to be over 18 years old.
Unaccompanied minors have access to increased supports, better accommodation and complicate the asylum process, making deportation trickier. In Sweden, they can also can apply for family reunification even while their asylum case is pending but I'm not sure if it's similar here.
As you can see from the post above, each unaccompanied minor can cost up to €1 Million a year for their care. There's a lot of money on the table for those working the asylum industry and a lot of advantage for asylum seekers to claim to be under 18.

There are currently 339 lone children seeking international protection under State care. Out of 597 lone migrant children which came into Ireland in 2022, 261 of those were Ukrainian. Last year, 177 lone children came in from Ukraine.
The vast majority of Ukrainian children are over the age of 16 and male, the committee heard.
