Latest plantation site is another of the old planter mansions, this time in Galway.

Described as splendid 19th Century Georgian House of the landed gentry, who prized it for its serenity amidst rambling woods and rolling lawns, Ross Lake House sits down a lane off the Clifden Road in Killaguile, about 7km before Oughterard. An American family bought it last year while it was still in operation as a hotel.

A briefing document from the government says 70 beds are going into it on the 21st of December with a one year contract for international protection applicants โ€” that's the non-Ukrainian variety of asylum seekers. There are no other official details.

The lads already have the lane barricaded with some logs but reinforcements are welcome.

There's an old badger fighting pit on the front lawn so maybe when all this is over Roderic can have a go in there to see how he fares. I've heard badgers are vicious but have never seen them scrapping.

Locals are continuing to block the lane down to Ross Lake House which has been earmarked to accommodate 70 single male asylum seekers near Oughterard in Galway.

In a statement to RTร‰ News, locals said that the blockade will remain in place for as long as it takes.

Fianna Fรกil Councillor Noel Thomas, who has previously criticised the asylum industry, has told Galway Bay FM that his phone hasn't stopped ringing, and that he doesn't blame the locals "one bit" for the blockade because people are genuinely worried.

"This is just another example of the complete and utter disregard that this current government is showing to the people in these areas."

Michael Bergin has posted on X that he believes Ross Lake House is owned by Allen Stringer who leased the property to HOP IT LIMITED (owned by a Ms Craughwell in Clarinbridge), who have the contract with the government to provide asylum seeker accommodation services. I haven't been able to verify this information.

Plans for 80 international protection applicants at the Anno Santo Hotel in Salthill by Christmas.

>There are 80 beds in the 20-room hotel, and the Department said the accommodation will be for โ€œadult female international protection applicantsโ€.

Female-only asylum centres are rare since we voted to amend the constitution to disincentivise pregnant asylum seekers flying in so they could skip the asylum process once their babies got Irish citizenship, so I don't know if this is a bait-and-switch or they're all transwomen or something. Usually there are at least some children or the odd couple in them.

The Irish Times reported there was just one female-only asylum centre in 2019. I think the Riverside Park Hotel in Macroom is female only and that started being used as a base for prostitution fairly quickly.

Internal polling by Sinn Fรฉin in central Dublin is said to have shown the party is unlikely to increase its share of seats on the city council and may actually lose some to immigration reform candidates.

Sinn Fรฉin are wobbling.

Ross Lake House in Galway on fire tonight.

The tragic thing about Ross Lake House is that the couple who sold their Texan home to buy it were really excited by their purchase and had a youtube, instagram & tiktok with 33k followers dedicated to the property's renovation, which they renamed back to what the planters had originally called itโ€”Killaguile House.

They were loving their retirement in Galway, with a daughter in the Rose of Tralee and a son in Riverdance.

Then in early December, everything was mysteriously wiped from their social mediaโ€”well, almost everything. Shannon Kincaid still has footage on her facebook gardening the property with her husband, Allen Stringer, in the background while she admires the large number of rhododendrons on the groundsโ€”an invasive species introduced to Ireland by the planters in the 1700s.

Though they may appear beautiful, the rhododendron is in fact a death warrant to the patches of the countryside it invades and need to be cut and then burned to prevent regrowth.

According to Fianna Fรกil Councillor Noel Thomas, the damage to Ross Lake House from the fire is devastating.

When asked about the extent of the damage he told Galway Beo: "It's all gone."

Meanwhile, Fianna Fรกil councillor for Connemara North, Sรฉamus Walsh, has told Galway Bay FM that while nobody could condone criminal damage, the government needs to take some responsibility.

"If it was a criminal act we have to stand back and look at it. What made that criminal act happen? And it's the senseless policy of the government."

"The people are living in fear, as I said, and if it was done maliciously, it is absolutely the fear for the safety and well-being of their families that drove people to this."

"We have flooded the country at the moment. There's no regulation in relation to how people are being brought into the country, and unfortunately people are just fed up with it. They've had enough, and now they're starting to come out and show that.

"People are coming out now in numbers to stand strong and barricade places off like this and you're going to see an awful lot more of that."
