200 locals protested outside Abbey Manor Hotel in the Leitrim village of Dromahair over news that 155 refugees are to be housed in the property, among them 31 single men. Dromahair has a population of 800. The hotel, a 200 year old protected structure has lain vacant for 13 years.

Fine Gael candidate for next year's local elections, Kevin Comiskey, told the Leitrim Observer that he was there to show his support: "I'm here to listen to the concerns, such as the primary care centre being at full capacity." He said there were concerns from any parents he spoke to about the 31 males "coming from a different culture and society."

Mary Kelly, a concerned resident, said that she had very little trust in the developer who originally guaranteed that it was going to be all families and no single men. "That turned out to be false," she said. She worries it could be all men.

"It won't be safe to let children walk around. I myself, as an adult, will not walk alone anymore either."

The main suspect in Thursday's stabbing frenzy of three children and their carer outside Gaelscoil Coláiste Mhuire on Parnell Square was arrested in May of this year for possession of a knife, as well as criminal damage to a car.
