Around 1,000 protesters blockaded Rosslare Europort today in opposition to any government plans to accommodate up to 400 male asylum seekers at the former Great Southern Hotel. The property was originally set to become a nursing home.
Independent councillor Ger Carthy said that today's protest will carry on for as long as it takes to change the government’s mind. 300 male asylum seekers are already being accommodated in the area which local reps say is at saturation point.
However, Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane told RTÉ that he was uncomfortable with protests of this nature and blamed the government for not building large-scale specialised accommodation for asylum seekers fast enough despite promises in the White Paper.
The top three countries of origin for asylum seekers in Ireland are Georgia, Nigeria and Algeria. Between 95% and 100% of their asylum applications are typically rejected annually, but deportation rates for failed applicants are minimal.

Little remembered WW2 history: In 1940, the UK rounded up into internment camps civilian males of German & Italian origin between ages 16 & 60 as ‘enemy aliens’ after Churchill demanded police “collar the lot.”
It was then decided to ship a reluctant contingent off to Canada on the Arandora Star for detainment there. The ocean liner had been successfully trialling anti-torpedo defences (skirts of iron mesh hung off booms), but these had been removed by the time she departed Liverpool with the detainees on July 1st, 1940.
The following morning, roughly half the 1,673 men on board would be dead when she was sunk by a German U-boat off the Donegal coast, many trapped below decks ringed with barbed wire.
46 German bodies from the grim calamity would wash up on Irish shores to ultimately find rest at a small serene cemetery tucked into an old granite quarry by a mountain stream in Glencree.
Stan O'Brien composed their epitaph:
Passion and pain
Were my loss—my gain:
Pray, as you pass
To make Good my loss.

"We were blissfully unaware that we were living amongst total evil and he was right under our noses in our community — practically on our doorstep in fact. Crossing a national border does not automatically instil a moral code in a person. You were given an Irish welcome and supported by the state to allow you to reside here. You repaid this by brutally murdering a beautiful talented girl who contributed so much to society."

The EU has devised a punishment for our deceptive GDP figures fueled by tax avoidance schemes for multinationals. I'd say our government is treacherous enough to opt us in.

Éamonn Mac Thomáis was an author, broadcaster, historian, Irish Republican, advocate of the Irish language and lecturer.
He took part in the 1956-62 IRA border campaign, where he would be interned in the Curragh Camp. He was a very active Irish Republican throughout the 1960s. Though close to Tomás Mac Giolla, he took the Provisional side during the split.
He presented his own series on Dublin on RTÉ during the 1970s and was well known for guided tours and lectures of his beloved Dublin.
However, he would be arrested and censored due to his Sinn Féin membership and was dragged through the Special Criminal Court during the 1970s Cruise O'Brien years.
Under Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act, due to his membership of Sinn Féin in the 1970s he was removed from his position in making some of the RTÉ historical programmes
I am going to post various clips of his below on Dublin, which are very melancholic given current state of the city - a glimpse into rare old times
