A Chinese student studying in Belfast has been scammed out of €230,000 by fraudsters posing as police from Beijing.
In a fake phone call made in recent weeks, the woman was told she was suspected of being involved in money laundering and two further individuals claiming to be from the ‘Beijing Police’ subsequently threatened her with arrest if she didn't hand over the money.
The fraudsters went to great lengths to make themselves appear genuine, and even went as far as dressing in Beijing police uniforms.
The PSNI received two similar reports last year of scammers who had targeted Chinese students studying in Belfast, defrauding the students out of €116,000.
That's a lot of cash for students to have on hand.

“I still haven’t heard from anyone on the council, even though I have been on the housing waiting list for 13 years.”
"I have a balloon and two stints in my heart after I had a heart attack on Christmas day. My doctor is going mad and is worried about the amount of weight I am losing.”
-Wicklow man Paul King who continues to sleep under a tarp in the woods in Laragh as winter approaches.
They could put him up in one of the 20 spacious, bright cottages on the 300 acre Kippure estate owned by Quanta Capital, but they're full of Ukrainians.

Locals in Sallins are continuing their protest outside the Waterways Hotel which is being renovated to accommodate single male asylum seekers at present.
Members of the Sallins Community Action Group protest all day from 6am to 7pm every day in rotating shifts. You can join their facebook group here.
The 79 room hotel could potentially accommodate up to 316 asylum seekers as hotels are typically used to sleep 4 per room. It is situated around the corner from a crèche and 1km from a mixed Catholic school.
The owners of the Waterways Hotel are Tetrarch Capital who also own and manage the Citywest complex where up to 3,000 asylum seekers have been accommodated.

The Irish Refugee Council has demanded Government build an extra 10,000 units of social housing each year to cope with the “increased numbers of international protection applicants in the coming decades,” who will arrive in large part due to “slow-onset climate impacts by 2050”.
They also want Government to provide an additional €109 million to the HAP budget so asylum seekers can exit the Direct Provision system and access the private rental market.
The also request €100,000 a year for the new position of a ‘Refugee Response Director’ and a €26.6 million increase in the daily allowance of asylum seekers already in the system.

Indians were protesting in Citywest last Friday though it wasn't clear why as their slogans were made via google translate. They suggest it was over issues with the Youngfella community though.
Clip 1. was posted by a redditor whose prior thread about what his problems are was deleted but he blamed a lack of free condoms for whatever they are.
Clip 2. was posted by a Solidarity councillor who attended the protest as did two TDs. I don't remember Balbriggan locals getting any support when they protested African gangs terrorising their community. I do remember them being called racist.
Clip 3. was a local father's reaction driving past.
It could be a case of culture shock. The brochures selling Ireland are full of charming people amid endless greenery but then you move here and there are hoodies on dirt bikes shouting 'watch it!' as they brapp past you because all their horse pastures have been concreted over. I'm hearing as much as 80% of some new builds are going to Indians out that way.

Over 250 locals turned out for the Newbridge Says NO rally yesterday evening outside The Gables Guesthouse.
"It was a breath of fresh air to hear normal people speaking from the heart without fear of being blocked, banned or censored," read a statement from a spokesperson.
There was discussion about joining forces with similar groups in the region like those in Sallins, Caragh, Naas & Rathangan for town hall style meetings, and a commitment was made to vote out any representatives who signed the 'highly divisive' “Newbridge4All” statement in which protesters were branded fear mongers, racists and hateful liars with nothing else to offer.
"Our real enemies are politicians like Roderic O’Gorman who are creating the pull factor for these economic migrants. Our real enemies are the departments & state bodies that are allowing undocumented men into this country. Our real enemies are the cowardly politicians who are staying quiet as our Irish culture and traditions get eradicated one by one."

A 30-year-old “main player” in the Black Axe crime organisation who was arrested by specialist detectives in an open prison this week is suspected of obtaining well over €200,000 in fraudulent Pandemic Unemployment Payments (PUP).
When arrested at the low-security Loughan House detention centre on Monday, the criminal was wearing a jacket valued at €2,000 and trainers worth €500.
Based in Lucan, he has previous convictions for a serious assault, drugs, and involvement in a money-laundering scheme, relating to a €30,000 invoice redirect fraud that happened in Galway in 2019.
GNECB officers suspect that a person who worked in a “sensitive” professional job passed on personal data including names, dates of birth and PPS numbers of a number of innocent people to the criminal who then used them to fraudulently obtain PUP.
“It was a very easy thing to make false PUP claims during the pandemic. There were not proper counterchecks being done, and organised criminals like this individual took full advantage,” said a senior garda source.
Edel McGinley, Director of Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, has claimed that organisations she is involved with managed to "secure a firewall" after successfully lobbying the government NOT to share details of Pandemic Unemployment Payments across government departments in order to prevent migrants from being recognised in the system and issued deportation orders if they were in the country illegally.
A whistleblower subsequently revealed that millions of euro was being paid out wrongly every week because cross-checks with information held by the Revenue Commissioners were not being done prior to payments being issued.

Helen McEntee says there is no evidence of a link between the number of asylum seekers in Ireland and an increase in crime.
We're supposed to believe scammers from a crime syndicate in Nigeria would never have dreamed of abusing the asylum system to set up a base of operations here. She's either lying or out of her depth but I suspect it's probably both.
A study by Revolut found that 64% of consumers say they have noticed a rise in online fraud and scams in the past 12 months with 46% admitting to personally experiencing fraud, and 47% knowing someone else who has.

Community activist Ferg Power says he got a call last night that three foreign men were acting extremely aggressively and abusive to some of the local ladies on vigil in Ballybrack village. One of the men had allegedly threatened to take his penis out when confronted.
Power subsequently drove around and found the men a short distance away on Military road in Killiney. He said they looked like they had been drinking, taking drugs or both because one of them couldn't even stand (clip 1).
Today while walking his dog, Power believes he has discovered where the men are staying (clip 2). It's a property called Kilmarnock House on Military Rd which was an 18th century convent ran by the Sisters of the Cenacle, up to about 30 years ago.
The 3.1 acre property subsequently fell into NAMA's hands and was on the market for €1.5 million in 2013 in a dilapidated state with planning permission for 90 bedrooms.
It's possible the owner took Government loot to renovate it in exchange for accommodating asylum seekers.
