On Tuesday, we were told detectives were left scratching their heads for a motive in their investigation into the Sligo grindr murders. Today, the London Times reports they do have a theory.
A separate report also says gardaรญ think the โฌ30,000 found stashed in a suitcase in Kurdish refugee Yousef Palani's home might be the proceeds of social welfare payments. The report adds that he was responsible for causing a lot of criminal damage in Sligo town and he was banned from lots of shops along with his associates for shoplifting. His family stood out as they did not maintain their four bedroom council house or garden, rarely interacted with their neighbours and the mother wore a niqab.
Last March, the Irish Times used the murders as evidence of the urgent need for hate speech legislation, pointing the finger at Christian fundamentalism, imported culture wars, parents being concerned about children accessing sexually explicit material, and of course the all-pervading 'far-right'.

Debanking
Radio Kerry
Diarmuid Cronin, the southern regional development officer for Muintir na Tรญre, says he has heard of instances where people have lost their bank accounts due to their political views in Ireland.
He told Radio Kerry that those who were targeted were people with concerns about asylum seekers being dumped in communities and that the cases warrant investigation by the government.
"I've been told of stories I'm reasonably sure of the people telling me were correct that individuals here have been debanked in this country.
"When you see what's happening the UK and how quickly the government stepped in โ I think maybe our own banks need a little bit of examining.
"It's not so long ago since we bailed them out of deep doo-doo. The way they're treating customers across the country โ I'm not just talking about people being debanked, but even the closure of banks, the move to cashless banks โ it doesn't inspire an awful lot of confidence."

Public urged to help combat illegal introduction of invasive species to Ireland.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) confirmed its staff discovered a non-native carp on the lake on July 17 during stock management operations.
In a statement to the Connacht Tribune, IFI said it was โvery concerned about the discovery of the invader species, and investigations are ongoingโ.
Carp are a non-native species in Ireland and may threaten the ecologically important ecosystem in Lough Corrib, including its recreational fisheries, IFI said.
There was already widespread concern among local trout and salmon anglers about the presence of predatory pike in the Corrib, and other non-native, coarse fish.
โWe would appeal to the people, or person, involved in the introduction of non-native fish to Lough Corrib or other water bodies, to think of the long-term ecological damage that is being done to the environment in a time when we are all well aware of the loss of native species.
Mr Stiffe said only one carp was found but inevitably there are more, as other invaders roam the lake.
โWe caught nine tench at Luimnagh in Ballindiff Bay recently. They are a non-native species, too, and they were spawning. These introductions are problematic,โ he said.

A mother says had an alarming experience in Fairview Park yesterday.
She told Gavin Pepper she was sitting on a bench watching her 6-year-old daughter in the playground when a tall African man wearing a baseball cap and denim jacket, who she had noticed circling the area and smiling, started pestering her.
When she rejected the man's advances and got up to leave, the man then started harassing her about getting into his car. Her 14-year-old son and some local men then noticed she was in distress and warned the man off but as she was leaving the park with her children, he tried to run after them. The locals then chased the man down and the family was able to escape.
The incident occurred near the Fairview footbridge where NGOs held a โRefugees Welcomeโ protest last January along with Game Of Thrones star Liam Cunningham to counter a series of rallies around East Wall by locals concerned with male asylum seekers being housed in a vacant office block in their community.

The Abbey Manor Hotel in Dromahair, co. Leitrim, which has lain vacant for thirteen years, is set to accommodate asylum seekers in September.
In mid July, locals noticed a number of beds going into the building which started generating rumours as everyone had been left in the dark about what the owner's intentions were.
Planning permission was granted in January for the 200-year-old protected structure to provide for one four-bed suite, eleven three-bed suites, nine two-bed suites and a manager suite.
Locals have campaiged since 2011 to re-open the hotel but many are disappointed to learn it would now be used as an asylum centre.
Regarding the lack of local consultation, DHMG Properties told the Sligo Champion:
โAs a privately contracted organisation, we can only communicate information that we are able to share. This is what we have done in our other accommodation centres. The relevant departments who will be using the accommodation notify the local authority and local representatives.โ

One of the top countries of origin for bogus asylum claims for the past 25 years with a 95% rejection rate. Even the Nigerian ambassador has been warning us about them as early as 2004. But they keep coming as they know the govt will only deport them in very rare instances.
The Department of Justice recently claimed there is no evidence of a link between the number of asylum seekers in Ireland and an increase in crime.

Algerian asylum seeker who spent 11 years in UK before arriving in Ireland 11 months ago has been charged with assaulting three people in Dundalk.
Two women told the garda that Lokman Benharkou (29) who is being accomodated at the Carnbeg Hotel had entered a takeaway on Park Street at 1:30am on Friday. He was agitated and started to shout abuse at them.
It was alleged that he then punched one of the women in the face, and she "immediately fell to the ground"; her female partner "jumped in front of Benharkou to prevent further assaulting her partner. At that point, it was claimed he punched her in the back of the head, also knocking her down to the ground.
The court heard another male "intervened "and was punched, fell to the ground, and the accused allegedly began to "stamp" on his head three or four times, "knocking him unconscious".
According to the garda's evidence, the accused left the takeaway but returned soon after and assaulted the male again on the ground, "punching him to the head and face several times".
The accused also had two charges for theft of โฌ5 and a phone from a man in Dundalk on August 6th.
He was bailed on a โฌ100 bond and granted free legal aid.
Garda Doherty had objected to bail due to the seriousness of the incident, which he described as unprovoked and "extremely violent in nature".

They are angered that the LGMA has put library staff in such a position that protests against them are necessary and say that the unions are of no assistance to them.
