An update on the incident in Tralee on August 7th last year when a young woman was stabbed a number of times by a Slovakian man and had to flee to her roof to escape.
The 25-year-old victim told Tralee Circuit Court today that she thought she was going to die during the brutal 'opportunistic' attack in which she was stabbed nine times in her home where she had been watching Netflix alone.
The court heard her attacker, a 20-year-old Slovakian man called Robert Bily, had only been in the country for about five weeks and had entered her apartment complex to go to a different flat, but subsequently entered the woman's apartment where he immediately forced himself upon her in what was described as a terrifying, life-changing attack.
Bily grabbed the woman and forced her towards the bed, telling her he wanted sex and a kiss. He then placed one hand on her windpipe, while holding a knife and punching her repeatedly in the face with the other.
He stabbed the woman nine times with the knife; five times in the neck, twice in the shoulders and twice in the back, while continuously asking her for sex as he lay on top of her.
Radio Kerry reports that the knife, which was presented in court, was damaged due to the force of the stabbings, and the blood splatters went onto the ceiling.
The court heard the Slovakian then took the womanโs phone and left the apartment, locking her inside with no way of calling for help as she lay lifeless in the bathroom.
Sgt Gilmartin said the woman heroically managed to crawl out a window while losing considerable amounts of blood, to the roof outside, where she remained hunched in a ball screaming for help until someone spotted her from the street.
Sgt Gilmartin told the court when gardaรญ arrived, they had to pull the paddy wagon against the wall and climb on top of it to help her off the roof, as blood pooled in the gutter so badly it was like rainwater.
The woman suffered a collapsed lung, liver laceration, and required an immediate blood transfusion as she had lost so much blood in the attack.
The Slovakian originally concocted a โcock and bullโ story to explain why he was there, but admitted to the offences after being shown CCTV footage.
In a victim impact statement, the woman said she suffers physically and mentally since the attack, during which she thought she was going to die.
She said her independence has been taken from her, and she suffers from recurring nightmares about what happened that night.
The sentencing hearing was adjourned until October 31st as the defence awaits a psychological report.

The face of the Slovakian national who had only been in Ireland for five weeks before intruding on a Tralee woman who was watching Netflix alone in her apartment, punching, choking and stabbing her nine times while he tried to rape her.
Robert Bily then left the woman for dead on her bathroom floor after stealing her mobile phone. She miraculously managed to climb out her window onto the roof to call for help.
The woman suffered a collapsed lung, liver laceration, and required an immediate blood transfusion as she had lost so much blood.
She continues to suffer physically and mentally and has re-occurring nightmares about the attack in which she thought she was going to die and which robbed her of her independence.

Cork Library Rallies
Red FM
There are two opposing rallies occurring in Cork tomorrow at midday outside the City Library on Grand Parade.
Yesterday, Red FM's Neil Prendeville spoke to the organisers of the separate rallies โ Richy Carrothers from the Fรณrsa Trade Union and Ross Lahive, a campaigner against sexually explicit material being accessible to children.
Lahive's segment begins at 11:42.
At issue is author Juno Dawson's guide to homosexuality which is available to children in the Cork Library and includes the consumption of excrement in a list presented as valid sexual experiences readers might like to engage in.
Ross Lahive has been entering the library to request the book be made inaccessible to children.
However, Richie Carruthers believes Lahive should be prevented from doing so, claiming the campaign is 'hate-speech' motivated by homophobia and causes harassment to staff.
Philp Dwyer and Derek Blighe say they will be supporting Lahive's rally tomorrow (details here).

I reported in 2021 that the public are being requested to report suspected sightings of non-native crayfish (pictured here) or dead native white-clawed crayfish through this online form as there were reports of a suspected outbreak of crayfish plague in the midlands.
There is now a new warning today that an outbreak of crayfish plague on the River Blackwater in the south of the country could wipe out the total population of the native crustacean.
The white-clawed crayfish is a globally threatened species with Ireland holding one of the largest surviving populations, providing an important food source for otters.
The establishment of non-native crayfish in Britain and Europe has been that these species have had very severe impacts on river ecosystems as they act as carriers of the disease but have developed a resistance. No resistance has been discovered in native European crayfish.
Water users are also being urged to wash and dry their equipment to try to stop the spread of the disease.

Tonight's full Primetime segment on the Hate Offences bill. McEntee is questioned at 8:38.
Nobody has yet been able to explain to me why assaulting someone due to their religion should carry a higher penalty than assaulting someone due to their political affiliations or the sports team they support.
However, McEntee did want to relieve people that comparing women in burqas to letterboxes will still be legal as will denying the right for the state of Israel to exist.
She also says there's no need to define hate because if you're wrongly accused of inciting it against one of her privileged classes, there's nothing to worry about as there's a long elaborate legal process you'll be forced through at your expense before you get back your devices they seized to investigate you.
We were also told that the majority public opposition to the bill was orchestrated by far-right groups while support for the legislation from NGOs was not orchestrated despite them all repeating the same copy pasta in their submissions.

Fingal County Council has served an enforcement notice on Unit 29, Airways Industrial Estate, Santry after the commercial unit was found to be in breach of fire safety and other regulations despite currently accommodating 228 asylum seekers, reports the Business Post.
In May, gardaรญ broke up a peaceful protest by elderly locals to force asylum seekers into the building, destroying their camp in the process.
Last November, the Department of Housing announced that planning permission would not be needed to convert buildings to house refugees for the next two years.
Now building regulators around the country are struggling to enforce crucial safety regulations, partly because the planning exemption means developers do not need to submit a commencement notice to local authorities if they are carrying out works to an existing house to make it fit to house refugees.
In an enforcement notice served on Gateway Integration Ltd, the company that converted the Santry unit into refugee accommodation, the council said the building had been occupied without compliance with a number of parts of the building regulations.
Fingal County Council ordered the company to take steps to rectify the non-compliances and threatened to seek a court order if this did not happen within five weeks.
Gateway Integration Ltd told the Business Post that the unit at Airways Industrial Estate โis being used as emergency accommodation to house asylum seekers at a time where there is significant pressure on the international protection systemโ.
โFurther work has been ongoing to address all issues raised and to ensure full compliance. Some of this has already been completed.โ

Kadima Mbuye, 53, an asylum seeker from the Congo who has been living in Ireland for nine years, was charged at a special sitting of Newcastle West Court in Limerick on Sunday with intentionally engaging in offensive conduct of a sexual nature.
A patient in University Hospital Limerick recovering from major surgery last March said she was terrified after the Congolese man allegedly broke into her room in the middle of the night and started masturbating in front of her.
โShe said she was scared to scream as she couldnโt physically move due to her surgery. She was terrified he was going to attack her,โ said Detective Garda Fiona O'Connell.
Mbuye denies the charge but was denied bail.
In 2021, Mbuye was accused of threatening staff with a knife at the Travelodge Hotel in Ballymun.
His defence solicitor had told the court he was in discussion with the Dept of Justice in relation to voluntary repatriation but that it was a complex and lengthy process.
