A paedophile rapist from Moldova, who travelled to Ireland just 18 days after being released from prison for raping a 14 year-old girl in his home country, has been jailed for six years for sexually assaulting a 50-year-old Fermoy woman who had been out walking her dog in a local park on a November evening.
Though Moldava is not an EU member state, it is estimated that between a quarter and a third of all Moldovans have a Romanian passport which they can use to live in Ireland under the EU's freedom of movement rules.
However, convicted criminals with EU passports can be blocked from entering Ireland on a case-by-case basis if they present “a genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat affecting one of the fundamental interests of society”.
So if Vadim Veste came to the attention of the authorities, they didn't believe he did.

Recall the case of this Moroccan paedophile with French citizenship called Philippe Gandus.
Gandus, who had been kicked out of the UK for attempting to abduct two 3-year-old boys, turned up at Dublin airport one day in 2015. Gardaí had been alerted as he was on an international watch list and were waiting his arrival.
They searched his suitcase which they discovered was full of children's toys but were forced to just wave him on despite one garda admitting he was extremely dangerous.
"We cannot stop him entering Ireland as he has no criminal convictions here and is a European citizen."
He roamed the country for two months unmonitored and was spotted as far away as Sligo.
So although under EU rules we are in theory permitted to block access to Ireland to EU citizens who pose a serious threat to the fundamental interests of Irish society, the government doesn't seem to think that should apply to child predators or perhaps it's just too much hassle.

A Limerick college student has waived her right anonymity in order to name the Nigerian man who was found guilty of raping her at the Cratloe Student Village in April 2018.
Utseoritselaju Uwatse (25), who moved to Ireland as a child, was sentenced to four years for the rape at the Central Criminal Court today.
Reading her victim impact statement to the court, she said:
“I don’t think there are any words that would convey the damage that you have done. The woman who is here today is broken down. I felt guilty for the heaviness I brought to my friends and family.”

"It will also be a crime to merely POSSESS material that is “likely to incite violence or hatred against a person or a group of persons”. Unless you can prove that you don’t intend to disseminate that material, it will be presumed that you do intend to do so."

This independent documentary on pine martens which was filmed in Galway explains why they're such effective grey squirrel exterminators.
1. A red squirrel will alert on the scent of a pine marten and is more likely to avoid them.
2. Due to their smaller size, red squirrels can scarper into the thinner branches of trees on being alerted to the presence of a pine marten. A pine marten won't chase them there due to the risk of falling.
In Irish we call them tree cats — cait chrainn. Land cats can of course climb trees but are rubbish at descending them. Tree cats, like squirrels, have ankles on their hind legs which can rotate 180° enabling them to securely grip the bark of a tree on the way down.
It's theorised that some place names like Carrickacat (Carraig an Chait – rock of the cat) or Glennagat (Gleann na gCat – valley of the cats) or Poulnagat (Poll na gCat – hollow of the cats) could be named for a once abundance of pine martens in these locations.

What's frustrating about stories like this is that like any animal, we have the instinct and pattern recognition ability to alert us to threats but our laws have been subverted to prevent us from using them. Worse, our predators fully comprehend how to abuse these laws and our morals.
A guy who ran a local charity shop called looking for donations one day. While chatting he advised me of the days new stock would be put on display and urged me to come in early as otherwise a certain group of people would come in and pick out all the best stuff to flip for profit. This, he said, made his charity shop a less attractive place for regular people use. We both nodded in exasperation as he said he knew he didn't need to name them.
