A mother who brought her daughter (5) and son (1) to Rathmullan Park fears there may have been a child abduction attempt made on her daughter.
The family were at the Ramparts Playground swings when a boy approached her daughter and started acting friendly. The boy asked her daughter how old she was and claimed he was 6.
This made the mother suspicious as he looked to be about 11 or 12, and she looked around to try to locate his parents.
The boy then suggested that they do something else but when her daughter declined the idea, he ran out the gates to where the mother realised his father had been sitting. He subsequently ran back with the suggestion that they play a game together.
Next as the mother turned away, she looked back and saw the boy was trying to pull her daughter out of the gates of the park by her arm. The mother screamed and ran over and the boy and and his father fled.
She described the pair as foreign but says the boy spoke perfect English.

Note that the councillor wasn't concerned for any of the elderly people who could be kicked out their nursing homes so the owners could increase their profits in the asylum industry, only that it could affect Fine Gael's election chances.

A paedophile rapist from Moldova, who travelled to Ireland just 18 days after being released from prison for raping a 14 year-old girl in his home country, has been jailed for six years for sexually assaulting a 50-year-old Fermoy woman who had been out walking her dog in a local park on a November evening.
Though Moldava is not an EU member state, it is estimated that between a quarter and a third of all Moldovans have a Romanian passport which they can use to live in Ireland under the EU's freedom of movement rules.
However, convicted criminals with EU passports can be blocked from entering Ireland on a case-by-case basis if they present โa genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat affecting one of the fundamental interests of societyโ.
So if Vadim Veste came to the attention of the authorities, they didn't believe he did.

Gandus, who had been kicked out of the UK for attempting to abduct two 3-year-old boys, turned up at Dublin airport one day in 2015. Gardaรญ had been alerted as he was on an international watch list and were waiting his arrival.
They searched his suitcase which they discovered was full of children's toys but were forced to just wave him on despite one garda admitting he was extremely dangerous.
"We cannot stop him entering Ireland as he has no criminal convictions here and is a European citizen."
He roamed the country for two months unmonitored and was spotted as far away as Sligo.
So although under EU rules we are in theory permitted to block access to Ireland to EU citizens who pose a serious threat to the fundamental interests of Irish society, the government doesn't seem to think that should apply to child predators or perhaps it's just too much hassle.

A Limerick college student has waived her right anonymity in order to name the Nigerian man who was found guilty of raping her at the Cratloe Student Village in April 2018.
Utseoritselaju Uwatse (25), who moved to Ireland as a child, was sentenced to four years for the rape at the Central Criminal Court today.
Reading her victim impact statement to the court, she said:
โI donโt think there are any words that would convey the damage that you have done. The woman who is here today is broken down. I felt guilty for the heaviness I brought to my friends and family.โ
