Citywest Hotel set off a false fire alarm to get asylum seekers they didn't like off the premises with the assistance of gardaí. They pulled the alarm so everyone would evacuate, then only allowed certain asylum seekers back in. The rest are your problem.

>One security source said: ‘There have been problems at Citywest for a while, especially dealing with a particular group of people who kept getting into trouble.

>‘There have been instances of violence as well as unruly behaviour. I know that the guards are aware of the behaviour of some people at the location and have concerns about their behaviour.

>‘What happened appeared to be the only way to get these residents out. They didn’t want the gardaí having to drag people out so this was the idea. Gardaí will keep an eye on the people who were removed.

>'There’s also a worry that they may try to return so there will be active patrols.’

19.2% of the population of Ireland is foreign born according to a new study by the ESRI while 13% of the total population don't have Irish citizenship.

The study says non EU migrants now outnumber EU migrants but that's because people born in the UK are counted as non-EU migrants since Brexit was finalised.

Data on where migrants who received Irish citizenship are from between 2016 to 2021 (47,460 in total).

The top ten countries of origin by size:

🔹 Poland (6,943)
🔹 Romania (4,148)
🔹 India (4,040)
🔹 UK (4,007)
🔹 Nigeria (3,025)
🔹 Philippines: (1,968)
🔹 Pakistan: (1,864)
🔹 Latvia (1,687)
🔹 Brazil (1,477)
🔹 China (1,206)
🔹 USA (518)

The largest number however are from countries marked "Other" (15,255) which tells us little.

Not sure why so many Eastern EU migrants want Irish passports but I remember some years back one of the NGOs held information days targeting Roma gypsies to inform them of the increase in state benefits they could acquire if they applied for Irish citizenship.

Notice the big increase in British people getting Irish citizenship since Brexit. They didn't feature in 2016, then topped the list in 2021.

The political mobilisation of migrants is one of the key focus areas for NGOs and government and there's a section dedicated to it in ESRI study. This bit's interesting:

It draws a link between the rise in prominence of Poland's Law & Justice party and the decrease in political engagement among Polish migrants in Ireland suggesting that as nationalism rises in Poland, their diaspora here just switch off instead of supporting nationalism here too.

It's understandable, but compare that to the Turkish population in Europe for example who we have seen are happy to mail home votes for the Turkish nationalist Erdoğan while continuing to support open-border parties in Europe. They remain politically engaged here while their leader taunts us that Turks will replace us as the "future of Europe".

Footage of the protest organised by @naturalwomenscouncil against the sexualisation of children in Swords today.

One of the main focuses of the protest was the availability of a book for 12-year-olds in public libraries called 'This Book is Gay'.

The book features on the govt-approved Rainbow Reads list of titles recommended for teens & children compiled by Children’s Books Ireland and An Post.

Among other topics, it teaches children about fisting, rimming, scat and how to use gay hook-up apps to engage in these practices.

Today it was announced that the HSE are to remove references to the book from a sex education resource for schools as new versions of the resource will not include recommended reading lists, but the book still remains available to kids in libraries.

Des Hennelly from the NGO Irish Development Education Association described protesters as 'book burners' and attended a counter protest with members of People Before Profit and Balbriggan For All.

After being made aware of what they were involved in, the subcontractor converting commercial units into temporary accommodation for international applicants in the Moneen Retail Park, Castlebar, has pulled out of the job.

Although this is somewhat of a success, we’ve heard of many of other facilities being converted for temporary accommodation in the past few days.

Are Mayo people happy with what’s going on? If not, I hope to see a good crowd in Castlebar this Saturday 8th April at 4pm.

People Before Profit’s Joe Daly has organised a ‘counter protest’ against our public assembly and they’re encouraging all their members and supporters to attend. They don’t want any open discussion on this issue. As always, we will treat them with respect and invite them to share their views with the crowd and engage in meaningful debate.

Biden's Mayo roots. Like O'Bama, he's getting a forecourt named in his honour ahead of his visit.
