"The future looks bleak unless the Irish Language is restored. We'll be little more than a 'Little England'. It would be pointless being an independent state. It would be much better to be part of a larger state and to enjoy the economy of that larger state, rather than struggling on our own. I see no point to that. The only reason we deserve independence, I think, is that we have a unique cultural identity."
Máirtín Ó Cadhain (died 1969) summing a lot of this up in this brilliant clip about what was going on in the 1960s mindset. What he's saying here is exactly it - if we are not Irish speaking, then there's 2 options. Fight to revive it and continue the Gaelic Revival and revolution sprung from 1916-22 or disband it and instead focus on material/economic matters.
And the latter is what the Reactionary Liberals of the 1960s wanted to do. The reason I'm calling them 'Reactionary' is because they sought to overturn the advancements that the Irish Nation-State had made since 1922 (but mostly since 1932 with Dev's Fianna Fáil) in asserting itself. They rejected the idea of an 'Irish-Ireland' pushed by Griffith, Rooney, D.P Moran, Pearse, Aodh de Blácam, Connolly, A.E Russell etc.
When Ireland hit a road block in economics in the 1950s due to failure of reforming banking/currency system and failing to nourish an entrepreneurial class and reverting for the easy option of foreign capital in 1958 to stimulate the economy (then totalling relying on it) - instead of taking up the task to tackle these matters and continue the stride of the struggling Nation-State, these 'liberals' who got a taste of foreign capital and British/American media, wanted to instead reverse it all and become a 'Little England' or simply an state within some larger global body like the EEC and forget about sovereignty.
"We want nothing to do with a backward-looking idea of sovereignty." as Micheál Martin exclaims today.
They wanted the reverse of what Thomas Davis sung:

A Nation once again!
No! - Reactionary Liberals don't want Ireland a Nation - they want Ireland as a mere Province.

Mother of school girl attacked in Longford speaks out:
>“The school told me I was ‘over-reacting’. I asked them why they hadn’t contacted the Gardai to report an assault on a minor,” she said.
>She then learned that her daughter and another victim, who said she had also been physically assaulted by the same girls, were asked by the school if they ‘were racist in any way that might have instigated the incident’.
>The school says she [the assailant] has a right to an education but my daughter has a right to feel safe, and there are other schools. There needs to be consequences for beating someone.”

Authorities in Germany are raiding people’s homes for ‘online hate speech’.
This included someone who highlighted the hypocrisy of politicians, another man who called a journalist “stupid,” people who misattributed quotes, and other who made fun of people in authority.
Hate speech laws don’t protect the weak, they protect the powerful.

The Government expects no let-up in the flow of asylum seekers into Ireland in the near future, with Minister for Justice Helen McEntee calling the increased numbers “a permanent change”.
>There have been about 10,000 applications for international protection in Ireland so far this year, compared with 3,000-4,000 in previous years. This is on top of the 50,000 Ukrainian refugees currently staying in Ireland. It is estimated, based on current trends, another 10,000 will arrive from Ukraine before the end of the year.
>“I think it’s just a representation of the changing environment, a changing world and many global challenges that people are facing, including climate and war. So we need to be able to respond.”
What it's really a representation of is the government's complete failure to tackle asylum fraud, and the decision instead to incentivise the abuse by offering free homes within four months of arrival to anybody who can cross the border and mouth the word 'asylum' with the knowledge they will be allowed to stay regardless when they inevitably fail their application.
But even if they were all genuine, the Irish people are under no obligation to be displaced by unending streams of foreigners who never go home (except on holiday). That is a real crime against humanity.
>The Minister was speaking on Wednesday following the announcement in the budget of an additional €18 million in funding to speed up the process of applying for refugee status and “to reduce the risk of people remaining in the system for long periods with uncertainty about their status”.
How about putting some money towards deporting at least the failed ones instead? Try that approach and the numbers arriving would plummet.
