"One of the most striking features of the bardic literature is this dominant conception of the Irish race, as forming a single homogeneous nation, owing allegiance to a single sovereign, and governed by edicts issuing from one centre of rightful authority, namely, Tara."

On this day in 1575, over 600 Scottish and Irish Gaels were massacred on Rathlin Island by an English force under Francis Drake and John Norreys. Of the 600, around 200 were surrendered soldiers. The rest were old men, women, children and the infirm, who were sent to the island for safety and hiding in the caves.
The Scots and Irish used Rathlin Island as a sanctuary due to its natural defenses of rocky shores, but also because it was respected as a place of refuge, having been associated historically with St. Columba.
Walter Devereux, Earl of Essex (pictured), ordered the killings and later boasted in a letter to Queen Elizabeth's secretary that the head of the MacDonnell clan, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, watched helplessly from the mainland as his entire family was slaughtered.

Sudanese migrant Nassar Ahmed jailed for life for murdering Eoin Boylan in Ennis, Co Clare. Ahmed has six previous convictions and came to Ireland in the 2000s. It's not explained how.
Ahmed had claimed he was acting in self-defence. CCTV footage showed him lunging towards Mr Boylan with a knife, stabbing him three times, as the deceased tried to back away.
Eoin Boylan's then girlfriend Susan O'Doherty was Ahmed's ex-partner.
Mr Boylan's mother told the court that she held her son while he lay dying and said she is "haunted" by his death and by his last words: "He stabbed me, ma. He stabbed me."
Catherine Martin said the murder of her son has "shattered my heart", leaving her struggling every day with the "heavy weight of despair".

>Organised prostitution is considered a national problem for garda headquarters, with escorts operating in almost every provincial town, usually from rented apartments and houses.
>The involvement of multiple gangs in the activity has made the problem almost impossible to eradicate, especially in places like Donegal and Roscommon, sources said.
>Once confined to large urban areas and controlled by Irish criminals, the illicit industry is now dominated by Brazilian, African, Middle Eastern and eastern European gangs โ including Romanians and Albanians โ and Chinese snakehead gangs, although there are also independent sex workers...but gardai say new gangs are emerging all the time.
"They're just here to do the jobs Irish people don't want to do!"

Harry's Hotel occupants lock their rooms and refuse to leave.
Buses were scheduled to arrive today to transport the current residents of Harry's Hotel in #Kinnegad to their new accommodation in Clare so that Ukrainians can replace them.
However the current residents say they are refusing to vacate the building and locking all the rooms until Minister Roderic O'Gorman agrees to halt their move. I thought we were promised a hunger strike?
Supposedly Gardaรญ arrived but just collected everyone's names and left.
This is all according the 'Say No To Direct Provision' facebook page who say a group of priests and nuns will be appealing for the men not to be moved to tents.
So we're back to the days of Catholic Ireland mattering. It's been granted a purpose.

The Argentine Navy flying the Irish flag's colours on ARA Libertad's sails in Killala Bay ahead of the ceremony to mark the 245th anniversary of the birth of their most celebrated Admiral, Irishman William Brown.
Brown was born in a tiny cottage in Foxford on June 22, 1777 in a time of fermenting rebellion.
During a colourful career which included scuttling a Royal Navy vessel he had been press-ganged into during the Napoleonic Wars, he would go on to found the Argentine Navy.
He has more than 1,200 streets named after him in Argentina as well as two towns, one city and several football clubs, along with 500 statues.
Brown's femur was smashed at the battle of Montevideo. He insisted on being treated on deck where he remained in excruciating pain to lead his ships to a famous victory.
The Argentinian Ambassador Moira Wilkinson, the captain of the Libertad, Carlos Schavinsky, and crew will be welcomed to Foxford on Saturday after docking the Libertad in Dublin.

The home where Admiral William Brown was born and his home when he died.
Only his birth home in Foxford still stands although a replica of his Casa Amarilla (Yellow House) was built by the Argentine Navy as a tribute.
Foxford had 144 looms with mills strung along the banks of the Moy propelling their huge wooden wheels, all part of Ireland's thriving textile industry.
But the British government moved to restrict the operation of woolen and later linen mills in Ireland and in effect legislated to create poverty.
Williams's uncle, a priest who celebrated Mass in caves up the mountains, would be accused of conspiracy in an insurrection against Crown forces. He was arrested, imprisoned and tortured but later escaped.
This was the Foxford William and his father were compelled to leave. His father would shortly die after reaching Philadelphia leaving William all alone in an unknown city at 10 years old, subsequently taking work on a US ship to begin his adventures.
