The biggest worry Sligo's former mayor Veronica Cawley has is that the town could get branded an 'intolerant community'.

This is what happens when the brave, new, liberal world has turned your brain into mush. It's all about keeping up appearances:

"We made a decision over thirty years ago to become a liberal society. No one group or individual is going to deviate from that. This is what we're aiming for.

"There's a lot of hard work been put in by a lot of people...and it would be terrible if all that hard work would be flipped off because of views that some people will hold that we are an intolerant society.

"We ARE liberal, and we are changing the community, and we've worked on this for a long, long time, and this is not the way we want to be seen.

"I'd hate the word 'hate crime' to come in. It's not the case. In may be an individual or a group, but we ARE a liberal society and the same applies to Sligo."
