In 2015, there were 3,276 asylum applications and the top five countries of origin for applicants were Pakistan (41.3%), Bangladesh (8.7%), Albania (6.5%), Nigeria (5.7%), India (4.4%). Others were 33.4%.

This led to urgent talks between the immigration authorities in Ireland and the UK Home Office because the majority had prior immigration history there.

Cross-checks carried out by Gardaí in 2012 using British fingerprint records revealed that about two thirds of 2,000 failed asylum seekers they investigated were known to Britain's Border Agency under a different name.

About a third had given a different nationality to UK authorities and 600 had already been identified by UK agencies as asylum shoppers. A majority had already been granted UK visas.

50% of marriages in Ireland between non-European men and non-Irish European women in 2011 were believed to have been sham marriages. The men were typically from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
