Although he played a crucial role in the Gaelic Revival, the German academic Kuno Meyer is no longer well known. A pioneering scholar of Old Irish, he helped revive appreciation of Ireland's ancient and medieval literature. Meyer founded the School of Irish Learning in Dublin and the influential Journal "Ériu". His award of the Freedom of Dublin was revoked due to pro-German comments during WW1 (posthumously restored by Sinn Féin in 1920)
