Even Sweden requires asylum seekers to prove their identity before they can work. Ireland doesn't.
Brian Merriman from Department of Justice told a Joint Committee meeting that Ireland now had a very open and generous access to the labour market for asylum seekers or those seeking subsidiary protection with minimal restrictions for anyone who has been waiting on a first decision for nine months or more.
In comparison, he said asylum seekers in Sweden must be able to prove their identity and they can only work in low-skilled employment. There is no such obligation in Ireland and we are one of the very few countries in Europe which allows asylum seekers to be self-employed.
Even when an asylum seeker fails, their application, they can continue working and living where they like for as many years as it takes to appeal the decision.

Simon Coveney says Ireland had to let #coronavirus in from Italy because of free movement and, we're not Israel.
Shocking. We're an island. This Robofool is no leader. We SHOULD be #COVIDー19 free. The professor is spot on.

Two key lessons from Italy published yesterday by @TheLancet @richardhorton1. a)Huge requirement for intensive care, and b) 4 men are dying for every 1 woman. https://t.co/q41RTWdfA3 Time for UK Government to ditch its flawed strategy and embrace proper #publichealth…

EU Freedom of Movement prevented Ireland from stopping the growth of Coronavirus
Prof. Kingston Mills from Trinity College told Prime Time on RTÉ that nearly all the cases of Coronavirus that we have right now were imported primarily from northern Italy. As a result, Prof. Mills queried why Ireland was still not controlling travel. Some weeks ago, he said Ireland should have stopped migrants coming into Ireland when a number of cases popped up in northern Italy.
He pointed to the example of Israel which is requiring all immigrants to undergo quarantine for fourteen days.
Simon Coveney who is acting as a caretaker Tánaiste however pointed out that Israel is not in the European Union and that nation states within in the EU do try to do things that are dramatic, collectively. He said he was also following the advice of the WHO.

Socially cohesive societies with strong group identity are best equipped to deal with pandemics
Pete Lunn, head of the Behavioural Research Unit at the ESRI was asked what was the most effective way to encourage people to do what is in their own best interest in light of the advice being given to citizens over the Coronavirus pandemic.
Lund said this is what is known as a collective action problem as all of our behaviour affects the behaviour of everyone around us and the risk that all of us catch the disease.
He said there are three things we know about solving collective action problems.
1. You have to be clear about why people should do things they need to do.
2. The stronger our group identity, the more likely it is that people comply.
3. We need social disapproval.

Close Everything. Stop Travel. The real danger is we are going to be doing battlefield level triage.
Prof. John Crown, oncologist at St. Vincent's Private Hospital told the Tonight Show that we could soon be in a posiition where we can't give oxygen to all the people who require it if the projections are correct. He said the real danger is that hospitals are going to have to do battlefield level triage and the stories coming out of Italy are horrific where medics are doing work that they never thought they'd be doing in a western world.
Asked for advice as to what to do, he said the goverment needs to be doing everything that Italy is doing now including closing everything and stopping travel.

Pakistanis living in Greece protest in Athens
Just to show you the a snapshot of the diversity levels in Athens.
This happened around September 2016.
The news report calls them Muslims but you can clearly hear them chant "Pakistan".
They know where their allegiance lies.
About 50,000 Pakistanis live in Greece according to the Pakistani embassy there although it is unknown if this figure includes Pakistanis born in Greece and all those who have acquired Greek citizenship.
