Ireland should commit to taking one refugee per every 1,000 of our population. This would see Ireland take approximately 4,500-5,000 refugees this year. It is important to note that Sinn Féin would not put an upper limit on it. We must not only do our fair share, but more than our fair share given our own emigrant history.

Sinn Féin continues to fully support the use of the Irish Naval Service in search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and call on the Government to ensure that these missions continue.

We will not support the use of the Irish Naval Service or Defence Forces to partake in offensive military actions under the EUNAVFOR Med mission.

Call for others to play their part on setting up safe and legal access to Europe. This could also include the provision of the issuing of humanitarian visas for those travelling from conflict zones.

Suspend Dublin regulations. Ireland must suspend these regulations to ensure effective access to asylum.

Call on the European Commission and Member States to activate the Temporary Protection Directive. Temporary protection is an exceptional measure to provide displaced persons from non-EU countries and unable to return to their country of origin, with immediate and temporary protection.

Call on the Commission and Member States to stop cooperation with third countries which aim at preventing asylum seekers from reaching a safe place in Europe.

Ireland should opt back in to the Common Euro Asylum System.

John Leahy on Tullamore asylum centre: All I'm looking for is the Irish to be treated the same.

Cllr John Leahy appeared on Midlands Radio 103 this morning to discuss the plans to turn the Marian Hostel in Tullamore into a Direct Provision centre for asylum seekers.

"How can we have a situation where people are going to be coming in and they're going to be parachuted ahead of ordinary citizens of Offaly that are on housing lists."

He said the hostel is a smoke screen.

"What happens is, there's an onus on the county council to take them from the Marian hostel over time for a smooth transition into housing."

What's happening here is they're going into Direct Provision, they're brought in then and given housing supports because they're not going to be left there. When they move out, there's more moving in. That's the system. So they go onto the housing list. At that point then, they're leapfrogged across.

It's a war of words is what's happening here. It's a PR spin but I'm telling you straight out. Other councillors have backed me in the chamber three months ago that this is what is happening but it's covered up in words.

The welcome is going to be tarnished with the fact that you need to treat people equally. The problem we have is the 168 are going to be treated differently and gonna get leapfrogged in terms of medical care, GP care and housing assistance. That is going to happen. What I'm worried about is we are discriminating against our own.
