According to official figures from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Germany recorded 168,543 asylum applications (first-time and follow-up) in 2025 — a significant decrease of 32.8% compared to 250,945 in 2024.

First-time applications alone plummeted to 113,236, down by 51% from 2024 (229,751) and by 66% from the 2023 peak of 329,120.

The government attributes this continued downward trend — now in its second year — to stricter border controls, the suspension of family reunification in certain cases, increased deportations (up ~20%), and other measures to reduce pull factors.
