For some context the ever since an attempted revolution by the Shia majority Bahraini population back in 2011 as part of the Arab spring the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) has kept troops there to keep the oppressive Al Khalifa family, who are Sunnis unlike most of their subjects, in power.

These troops were kept there due to fear Iran might use the island against Saudi Arabia, however recently Iranian-Saudi ties have improved significantly. (And also the fact Iran fucking sucks ass and couldn't use Bahrain if they wanted too)

Bahrain has been way tighter with the UAE, who also have a military presence on the island, than with the Saudis. With Saudi linked channels accusing the UAE of trying to use Bahrain to harm Saudi interests.

The Saudis withdrawing their troops from the island basically means that they're telling the Emiratis to go fuck themselves and try to keep down the Shiites by themselves.

Not only is this a pretty clear escalation of the two country's beef but IMO also shows that the Saudis have now definitely switched to seeing UAE as a hostile power and their main rival in the region, both of which used to be Iran
