sensitive Canadian tech through European front companies, and China attempted to recruit Canadians with military or specialist expertise.

Canada is responding by investing C$1 billion in Arctic infrastructure like airports, seaports and all-season roads, recognising the region’s growing strategic importance.

There are three likely motivations behind this:

1) Trump has conspired to partially conceal or otherwise alter the files such that he feels protected enough to advocate for their release.

2) Someone showed him that schoolhouse rock video about how a bill becomes law, and it seems extremely unlikely it will make its way fully through the congressional legislative gauntlet. Therefore, safely feign support and blame it on Congress if it never reaches his desk. For example, if the Trump administration receives assurance from Senate leader John Thune that the House bill will never be brought to a vote in the Senate

3) Trump is demonstrating a textbook example of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) rage and is lashing out ie “If I’m going down, I’m taking all of you fuckers with me”

Oh, there is actually a 4th possibility I didn’t consider.

It’s possible that he knows that a large scale defection of GOP reps is going to occur in the House to release the files.

By throwing out a fairly offhand statement of support to release, he can save face by saying he allowed it to happen vs getting trounced by a vote result that he opposed.
