According to the report, a welder from Russia’s Tula region disappeared while looking for work. Days later, he resurfaced 1,500 km away in Chelyabinsk, having signed a contract to fight in Ukraine.

He was drugged, abducted, stripped of his documents and held by recruiters.

The same day, Sergey was married to a woman from Ufa whom he did not know. A notarised power of attorney concerning his property was arranged, and bank accounts were opened. Two days later he signed a military contract and was assigned to an assault unit.

More than 3 million rubles in military payments were allegedly taken from him.

When 74.ru journalists travelled to the remote village where he was held, residents described what they believed was a wider operation: vulnerable men brought in from across Russia, controlled, sent to war, and deprived of their military payments.

Then came an even darker discovery: a man’s body was reportedly found at the property of one of the recruiters, the victim had suffered severe head injuries and his body had been concealed in concrete.
