Some family lore of mine is that while most people would assume Tajiks and Pashtos hate each other only since the rise of the Taliban in the 90's they have been enemies/rival long before this

My great grandfather was brought to the Tajik SSR after WW2 due to participating in some slight tomfoolery during the war which the Soviet Union was not very appreciative of to say the least

Shortly after arriving there my family said he picked up a new favorite slur "Pashtunen Hirte" which means Pashto Herder/Sheppard

Whenever someone was misbehaving/being a nuisance he would immediately call them a Pashtunen Hirte and tell them to behave like a civilized person

The slur apparently came from the fact that the Tajiks, whose ancestors had picked up an urban sedentary lifestyle significantly earlier than those of their Pashto-Kuchi and Turkic neighbors, looked down upon the Pashto-Kuchis as rural goat herders and raiders incapable of building anything.

While the Tajik ancestors were already living in and building cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, Kujand, Herat etc the Kuchi's, a subgroup of the Pashtos, ancestors loved to raid exactly those settlements

These tensions which built themselves up for so long came to their peak during the Afghan and Tajik civil wars. With the Pashtos generally being more attracted to the Al Qaeda type Islamism while Afghan Tajiks like Ahmad Shah Massoud were more sympathetic towards the west. And this has remained the case to this day with the Tajiks making up most of the opposition groups against the Taliban.

Listen man if you can't build a railway somewhere due to heavy protests by the locals for 20 fucking years then maybe just don't built a fucking railway the railway it cannot possibly be worth all this tomfoolery
