During Iraq’s war with the islamic state, the threat of VBIEDs was a particularly dangerous one due to ISIS’s ability to flood Baghdad with hundreds of VBIEDs during the early phase of the war. As such, the Iraqi government tasked the Falcons Intelligence Cell with finding a way to infiltrate the group to thwart car bombings

It is here that a man named Harith Al Sudani comes to play; a member of the Falcons unit, he managed to be recruited by ISIS and quickly gained the trust of the group’s high command, being assigned VBIED attacks, his job was to drive the car bombs and park them where they would cause the most damage, detonating them remotely. They believed he would raise less suspicions due to being native to Baghdad, sending him on 30 VBIED missions

Unbeknownst to his ISIS higher ups, none of the bombs reached their destination

His operations followed a similar pattern, undercover, al-Sudani would inform his Falcon team of his mission, driving bomb-cars to Baghdad. A Falcons' chase car would follow, equipped with jamming devices to prevent remote phone activation of the bomb. At a check-point or agreed stop, he would let the Falcons demining team dismantle the bomb and replace it with relevant pyrotechnic devices, or lure and neutralize the suicide bomber he was transporting. Then, dropping the car at the target point, other Falcons agents would take place and act as victims of a light, controlled explosion. Photos and fake security briefs would be sent to news organisations to pretend a successful attack occurred and fool ISIS. Captain al-Sudani would then be picked up by clueless ISIS agents, then rinse and repeat another 30 times

Unfortunately, ISIS had slowly began to grow suspicious of him due to discrepancies with his GPS locations on multiple occasions. On December 31 2016, on his last mission part of a wider offensive, his suicide truck was bugged with listening devices, and they heard him talk to his handlers, his cover had been blown.

🕊️ On January 17, 2017, he was recalled to his usual spot by ISIS for another mission, this was the last time we heard of him. To this day he’s still regarded as a hero and Iraq’s most successful spy
