🇲🇲 - The new chief minister of Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, is a disgraced former police chief who botched a child rape case so horribly it led to nation wide chaos.

The case in question is the Victoria child rape case from 2019 when unknown perpetrators raped a two year old child in her nursery school in Naypyidaw.

Initially the police tried to cover it up, but after a whistleblower leaked the incident to the public and protests ensued the police succumbed to the pressure and opened an investigation.

Deputy Police Chief Aung Naing Thu was personally tasked with handling the case. After a while of no results and mounting public pressure Naing Thu made an arrest. The man arrested was the driver of the nursery's supervisor.

After a months-long court battle during which the police also doxxed the victims family by accident the case was dropped because of a lack of evidence, the suspect's DNA did not match the driver and the staff testified in his favor.

The public widely believed that the two sons of the nursery school's supervisor, whose family had close ties to the police, were responsible for the rape and that the police had tried to set up the driver in order to protect the family and themselves from the backlash

Public protests were wide spread during this whole debacle with many people upset over this apparent case of police corruption

In the end nobody was ever punished in this case, neither the perpetrator nor the men who botched the investigation. The case was essentially completely disappeared by the Junta after they seized power in 2021.

The same man that was behind this debacle will now hold the highest office and be responsible for running the largest and most economically vital city in the entire country. He was personally nominated by Junta leader Ming Aung Hlaing.
