🇩🇪 German first division club Mainz 05 was forced to pay an approximate 1.5 to 1.7 million euros to Dutch football player Anwar El Ghazi after their appeals to a higher court failed twice and they are now blocked from further appealing the case.

🇵🇸 The incident happened at the end of 2023 where the player made a post on social media accusing Israel of genocide and saying quote "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free"

🤔 Mainz 05's leadership found this unacceptable and immediately after cancelled his contract. El Ghazi proceeded to take it to court due to believing the way it was handled was not justified.

🥸 The courts believe that what he posted was his personal freedom of speech and that the actions taken by the club not only violated it but we're also illegal.

✍️ Over 2 years later and Mainz has finally had to admit they were not legally allowed to cancel his contract over him expressing his opinion on social media. The court previously found that the club had to pay the player the wages owed to him for the remaining span of his contract due to the unjustified cancellation. Any remaining amounts not already paid will have to be paid now.
