Today marks not just the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but also, in my opinion, the most decisive battle in the war - Hostomel Airport. A 3.5km, reinforced concrete runway, capable of landing very large aircraft just outside of Kyiv.

On Feb 24, 2022, Russia hit the barracks near the airfield with Kalibr cruise missiles.
Small groups of conscripts from maintenance units and a couple of units of national guard armed only with light weapons, manpads, and a couple soviet AA guns guarded the airport.

At least 34 helicopters - mi 8s, 24s and 28s, supported by Ka52s - took a route from Belarus over the dnipro, before veering off to Hostomel, attacked the airport and were held off for several hours by the defenders.

When they managed to eventually land they were harassed by the soldiers stationed there, so that by the time the VDV troops had captured the airport, Ukrainian brigades with heavy artillery and mortars arrived from their base 100km+ away and inflicted heavy damage on the runway and hangars.

This prevented the Russians establishing a crucial air bridge in the first day of the war, on Kyivs doorstep. When Russian forces were repelled, up to 18 IL76 transport aircraft on their way to Hostomel were forced to land in Belarus.

Although Russian ground forces did take the airport in the coming days as their lightning advance moved south, this delay is a significant reason the Ukrainian government and its independence survived

At the start of the war I remembered working and seeing the news, I never thought the day would come when war would happen again at such a large scale. Most of us remember being in classes teaching us about WWI and WWII thinking we would never see such wars again. I remembered seeing the first air siren video, the start of the war, the videos of the night sky being lit up with gunfire and explosions. The Ghost of Kyiv defending the Ukrainian skies. Despite the harsh and brutal conditions, the citizens of Ukraine set up checkpoints and defended their streets knowing there might not be a tomorrow. May their sacrifices be remembered, and those who gave their all may their sacrifices not be in vain.

Russian military recruiters have received a “stop-list” that bans them from enlisting citizens from 43 countries.

China, India, Brazil, Turkey, Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, Argentina, Iraq, Yemen, Cameroon, Colombia, Libya, Somalia, Kenya.

Ukraine has identified at least 18,000 foreign nationals within Russia’s ranks and is currently holding prisoners of war from 37 different countries.

This is only part of what can be shown at this point. Many updates with new objects and implementations to the system are planned.
